Seussical Audition
#0Seussical Audition
Posted: 3/7/06 at 11:00pmI have an audition coming up next week and we need to sing 16 bars of an upbeat broadway song. I am a female alto, 15 years old, and nervous because this will be my first high school musical. I have been in musicals through community theater for awhile though. Are there any songs you would recommend?

"Dont be Anything Less, than Anything you can be" from Snoopy the Musical

I sang "Purpose" for my Seussical audition, yes I'm a girl, and I landed the Sour Kangaroo..
Something fun..what about "My Strongest Suit" from Aida?
Be smiley! Have a really fun song. If you're shooting for Gertrude, thats the one character I wouldnt know how to characterize for an audition song..

OMFG I love Seussical. I was totally the most flaming JoJo that ever existed (I pissed off so many follow spot operaters over the run I wouldn't hold still)
Anyways, totally go for something Beltish and Very VERY Bright. Like Once on this Island, or (if you want to sing something known) Defying Gravity. Get the CD, it's very derivative from other shows (Like you could sing Tits and Ass from Chorus Line)

If it's truly a good fit for you there's no reason you shouldn't do the song. I transposed my upbeat for CCM and they loved it and I was accepted. Actually, they transpose on Broadway all the time if the performer fits the role! Don't sweat the small stuff like that, just do what you will shine with and go for it!

Matt, I think it depends on the song. If it's something so popular as My New Philosophy the auditors are going to definately know that it was transposed. Plus it's a poor song choice anyway because that song is synonymous with Cheno. So when someone else is singing it all they're going to think about is Cheno.
My advice is something from Once On This Island.

DO NOT SING DEFYING GRAVITY
never never never never!!!
zannadont....thats basically rule #1. And I'm positive mostly everyone on this board will agree. Waiting for Life from Once on this Island is a great song though.
If an ultra new musical is your only choice. Not for the Life of Me from Thoroughly Modern Millie is ok. It's upbeat and all, but I dont reccommend it for any other auditions besides HS. It's easy to get karaoke to, and it's a fun belt song.
Good luck!

I am having the same problem. I'm also an alto/belter.
I thoght about "Shy" and "My New Philosophy" but are they both over done? My other idea was "Good Morning Baltimore" from Hairspray. Could that work?

yeah, there are DEFINATELY certain songs to steer clear of (Defying Gravity, On My Own, Memory...yadda yadda, etc.) basically any well know character songs. Here's a list of some of them ( https://www.musicaltheatreaudition.com/performance/auditions/overdoneauditionsongs.html ) I'd say just pick something fun. I guess it really depends on who you are auditioning for too...
Seussical itself has lots of well-known little melodies and what-not in it. It shouldn't be too hard to find a song. Basically take a look at the character you want and listen to their songs on the recording. Look for a song of the similar style that isn't overdone and sing it.

I sang "Good Morning, Baltimore" and got the role of "Gertrude." I dunno who you're auditioning for but some of my other choices were
*My New Philosophy
*NYC (the "Star to Be" part)
*Born to Entertain
*I Know Things Now
Good Luck! Aside from Les Mis, it's my favorite show I've done!

Posted: 6/22/06 at 10:11pmDont Be Anything Less is just as cute as New Philosophy, but not as known. I'd go with that, unless you want Mayzie or the Kangaroo - maybe then something with a little more attitude.
