Several thousands rally for gay march in Poland

WARSAW (AFP) - Several thousand people staged an international rally in Warsaw in support of gays in Poland, who complain of prejudice, hostility and violence in this overwhelmingly Catholic country.

A police spokesman said around 2,000 people set off on the "Equality Parade" gay rights march at 1:30 pm (1130 GMT) through the centre of the Polish capital.

They'll have a tough time, the police and the mayor of warsaw aren't on their side at all. In some aspects Poland has non-European attitudes.

that mayor is now president of the country, he has no say now.......and the march was successful.........

True, I just recall what happened lately in Russia. One of our (German) openly gay politicians was there for a similar march and was beaten down whilst the police didn't seem to have any interest in intervening...

Edit: Fas as I know the new mayor of warsaw doesn't really make a big difference to the former one. Updated On: 6/10/06 at 10:39 AM

I Russia the march was broken up, in Poland it was not......huge difference.
