I was visiting some friends last night and we started discussing great musical actresses. His all time favorite is Doris Day. Now, aside from having seen the film version of THE PAJAMA GAME in which she starred I really hadn't seen any of her other films, musical or otherwise. She never really got my attention and I never really gave her recordings a listen except for the soundtrack to THE PAJAMA GAME. I guess you could say THE PAJAMA GAME was my only real exposure to Doris Day. I knew of her I just wasn't in to her. Maybe it had to do with those "corny" romantic comedies she made with Rock Hudson and the image she gave off in them.

Well the discussion turned into a debate with my friend making it his mission to prove to me just how wrong I was about Doris Day.

I stand corrected and I have a newfound respect for Doris Day as not only an immensely gifted musical performer but a gifted actress as well. The movie that made me do a complete "three-sixty" in regards to Miss Day's talents was the film LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME.

What a film! What a performance...What a woman! Never, ever would I have ever categorized Doris Day as sexy. But she sure was one helluva sexy woman...she just had the whole package.

Now I am completely in love not only with the film and it's soundtrack but of Miss Day herself.

Doris Day just got herself a new fan!

I've been doing quite a lot of reading on her career this morning and was very suprised that she wasn't even Oscar nominated for LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME.

My friend was more than willing to share his VERY extensive Doris Day CD collection with me as well as some of her films and he has every single one you've mentioned on your list best12bars. I will be watching them this week.

I'm currently re watching LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME as I type this. Updated On: 2/2/10 at 11:05 AM

She's shockingly good in Love Me or Leave Me--and she's a surprisingly good singer.

Her image was so sanitized in those 1960s comedies with Rock Hudson, or singing "Que Sera Sera" or "Secret Love" or Please Don't Eat the Daisies that it erased her deeper and darker and more complicated qualities.

You can't have a conversation on Doris Day without mentioning my two favorites. Jumbo and Calamity Jane. Calamity Jane was a favorite film of her's since she considered herself very tomboyish.

Other films to check out:

Julie
Lover Come Back
Romance on the High Seas
Tea for Two
West Point Story (costarring James Cagney!)
Don't Send Me Flowers

I don't know if there's any other actress who could get mad the way Doris could. She's just great at it.

I'm surprised there isn't a YouTube of her doing "Ten Cents a Dance" in Love Me or Leave Me.

That's the performance that changes what you think of her.

More than Ten Cents A Dance, this number is the one that had me going "WOW!!!". Just check out the way director Charles Vidor captures her full figure to the left of the screen as the scene opens...from only the neck down, accentuating her phenomenal figure. Her body language, moves, looks...incredibly sexy! I was completely bowled over by this woman in this movie. A true triple threat.

Partial view of my newly acquired (Thanks to my friend Steven) Doris Day playlist. I couldn't decide which CD's to upload so I uploaded the bulk of her Columbia Records catalogue and some excellent compilations featuring songs from her Warner Bros. recordings and her Big Band period.
