I saw a screening last week and HIGHLY recommend it. One of the best films of the year, and a possible Oscar contender if they can afford to campaign. Brie Larson is incredible along with the rest of the cast.
I really want to see this movie, as I am a massive fan of John Gallagher Jr.; on stage, on screen and on my iPod. However, I'm just far enough away from New York City that it isn't playing in my area.
Also, can anyone else tell me why it has an R rating? Language, I'm assuming?
Language. There are some minor sexual references, but that's pretty much it.
HOLY CRAP!
This was one of my favorite films I have seen in my LIFE! Not the month or the year, but my life. I don't have a single complaint about anything except that it ended. (What's that Ebert quote- No good movie is too long and no bad movie is short enough.)
I was worried about being off put by the subject matter, but the situations and character arcs were so well-written and acted.
Brie Larson is so F*CKing amazing there are no words. I really, really, really, really, really loved her.
John Gallagher Jr gave the best performance I've ever seen from him. He's such a natural on screen too. (He introduced the film tonight and I really wish he had been around after to congratulate on the work he did.)
All of the kids were incredible but the actors who played Marcus, Jayden and Luis were the best. All the kids were so developed in such a short amount of time.
The rap was amazing. Jayden's story was a tearjerker. That was the first time I cried, and once the floodgates were open I couldn't stop.
I urge everyone to go see this film.
It's a very emotional experience. The last act really builds a lot of dramatic momentum.
