I would do Ronald Reagan, but we cannot include presidents.
Interesting since his choice to ignore an epidemic that was sweeping the world and is still killing millions.

The project is a decade notebook and we also need three themes. I am including the beginning of the Aids crisis as one of them.

Are there certain areas? Sports, theater, entertainment, government, world leaders,
medicine, science?
If one area is dealing with AIDS there is the supermodel Gia. Don't know if she used a last name. She was deemed one of the first women in the US to have died from the virus.
I know you said no Presidents, BT11, but what about First Ladies?
Who could forget Nancy Reagan and the White House China?
BT11,
This will probably help--it's a whole site devoted to the 1980s:

If you are concentrating on AIDS, you want to explore Randy Shilts, Larry Kramer, Ryan White, actor Paul Michael Glaser, his wife and their children.
In the '80's there was an urban legend that said that there was a male flight attendant who was the first AIDS carrier and had infected hundreds of people.
Another AIDS activist and writer: Paul Monette, although his most famous work didn't win the National Book Award until 1992.
