Silent movie "Michael"

I just finished watching "Michael," a German silent film directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer. I was amazed to see a film from 1924 with such strong homosexual undertones.
Has anyone else seen this film? The relationship between the Master and Michael is said to be that of father & adopted son, but there are many lingering touches, longing gazes, etc. between the two. Do you think this is just because of a heightened physicality as a result of no sound, or was the director really trying to say something else about the relationship that could not be said aloud at the time? I haven't read anything else about this film, so I may be looking too much into this or maybe I don't understand the art of silent films (since I've only seen about 3 or 4). Any comments by anyone else who may have by chance seen this would be great!
