That's an interesting question...
I would have to think about that one for abit...

Posted: 6/30/05 at 4:04pmI'm sure Streisand had no say in the casting of 'Dolly'. Ernest Lehman made all the final decisions about casting. Even the studio wanted and expected Carol Channing in the role. It was Lehman (who had a lot of clout at Fox), who went against Channing. Streisand was signed to do 'Dolly' and ON A CLEAR DAY, before FUNNY GIRL was even released.

I read that the reason that Carol wasn't given the role in the film was because she came off to some as "too cartoonish" in "Thoroughly Modern Millie". But then she was Oscar nominated in the role so that may or may not be true. I wasn't there nor was I even born at the time all of this was going down so I'm just relying on things I've read for my information.

That's a true statement; but it was Lehman who thought that, not 20th Century Fox. Ernest Lehman was the producer of HELLO, DOLLY! He decided that Channing was all wrong for his vision of the film. This was one time when the studio wanted (or at least expected) to use the original star. Too bad Lehman felt that way. I wasn't born, either; but the musicals of the '60's, are my advocation! I've done tons of research on them. I even spent some time going through the Fox and other studio archives, during research on the never to be filmed, SAY IT WITH MUSIC, which started at Paramount, went to Fox and ended up at MGM, before being cancelled, completely.

Wow! ConvinceMe2...the musicals of the 1960s is one of my favorite periods too! I do alot of research too on that period and the 50s and 40s also from time to time. Some of my favorite actors are from that era!
Now you've peaked my interest on "Say It With Music"!

On Lehman I would have to say he did a wonderful job in adapting "West Side Story" and "The Sound of Music" for the movies.
I would have thought that he would have at least wanted to keep Carol Channing in her original "Dolly" role in much the same way Columbia kept Streisand for "Funny Girl".
It's funny how Streisand got to play both her original "FG" role and then go on to play "Dolly Levi". "Hello Dolly" was "FG's" biggest competitor on Broadway the season they both debuted, am I correct?

Posted: 6/30/05 at 5:00pmYep. I don't like her or FUNNY GIRL, at all. I can take her better in Dolly, even though I know she's all wrong for it. I just don't get the appeal of FG. It's a horrible bore, to me. When I finally saw Carol Channing do the role, it was like seeing the piece for the very first time. Throughout the entire thing I kept saying to myself, "Oh, that's how that line should be done!"

Interesting observations CM2. I've never had the opportunity to see Channing in "Dolly" but I've heard her on the OBC CD.
Streisand's okay in the film. I do like the film. I would have to agree with you that I do prefer Streisand in "Dolly" over her performance in "Funny Girl". "Funny Girl" was for the most part very boring, especially after the Intermission. "Hello Dolly" was alot more fun.

Posted: 6/30/05 at 5:07pmI got the feeling while watching "Funny Girl" that everything was too pre-meditated and calculated for it's own good.

Posted: 6/30/05 at 5:10pmYes, a lot more fun. With wonderful numbers and production values. It never comes off claustrophobic, or studio-centric, like a lot of musicals do. Some work better than others in that regard. I can post my findings on SAY IT WITH MUSIC, once I find them. I mean, I remember a lot of it, but I hate to post things incorrectly, if I can help it, at least.
