I think Hollywood has a huge tendency to overrate peoples' interest in 40's and 50's action nostalgia. 'The Shadow,' 'The Phantom' and 'The Rocketeer' were all pretty good flicks, taken in comparison to their source material but that sort of wide-eyed sci-fi goofiness doesn't read well to modern action audiences weaned on 'Die Hard' and 'Bad Boys.'
I personally like that old weird stuff so I'm hoping to like 'Sky Captain' but I wouldn't be surprised to find that me and my fanboy friends are alone in admiring it.

Posted: 8/31/04 at 10:32amSo I am not alone in thinking the whole "delay it until after summer to position it in a more Oscar worthy slot" was all nonsense then? I want to enjoy it, but the film looks very overdone and the first reviews are now starting to trickle out and they have not been kind.

Posted: 8/31/04 at 10:33amI think the film will have a small start but Gweneth, and word of mouth might generate interest ala XMen.

Posted: 8/31/04 at 10:34amI thought it was 'keep it away from Spider-Man' more than holding out for an Oscar.

Angelina Jolie gets me more excited than Colin Farell.
I'll be there first show opening day.

Posted: 8/31/04 at 10:35amRight. But the "official" spin was that the film was too good to open in the summer and they wanted to garner some awards buzz. As opposed to "Spider-Man will kill the film dead", which it may well have done.

Posted: 8/31/04 at 10:40amI'm curious to see what Gwyneth does in the flick. In theory her character is there for one reason: to be in distress. I'll be interested to see if they try and make her more than that or not.

And whether she tries as well. God knows, she's an intelligent enough actress. But one of the reviews said this:
"Jude Law seems a little lost when acting against a blank canvas. Or Gwyneth Paltrow, as she's otherwise known."

Posted: 8/31/04 at 1:07pmIt looks like fluffy fun to me. I'll go see it, but I'm not going to expect it to be anything more than an excuse for special effects. It's got to be better than League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Daredevil, Van Helsing, Underworld, and the parade of computer animated drek that's been pumping out of Hollywood.

"It's got to be better than League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Daredevil, Van Helsing, Underworld .."
I'd say 'it would have to be' but, as we know, they keep finding ways to go one worse than before.

Posted: 8/31/04 at 5:18pmThis has been six YEARS in the making though, which is more than can be said for those other films you listed. Though I enjoy a couple of them in a guilty pleasure kind of a way.

Posted: 9/17/04 at 4:44pmJust bumping this back up as it opens today and has received a lot of great reviews. Some negatives, but absolutely loads of great notices. Anyone going to see it this weekend?

Posted: 9/17/04 at 4:59pmi think this one will be beautiful to look at, but pretty empty once it's said and done...and how good can anything be with Angelina Jolie skanking up the works? Is it just me or does she look like the patron saint of herpes?

Posted: 9/17/04 at 5:00pmI would slap you silly if I were near you. Angelina Jolie is a Goddess. GODDESS, I tell you. The movie will be flawless with her in it.

Posted: 9/17/04 at 5:04pmI'm excited for it, just because it will be great to look at. Not expecting much more than that, but it does have a great cast. And finally, Jude and Gwyneth can use their real accents, and not the fake (American, British) ones they usually have to use in their movies.

Posted: 9/17/04 at 5:20pmAnd Gwyneth refuses to make press appearances. And why should she have to? She only got paid, what, a few mill? I wouldn't either. Slavedrivers.
#23re: Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow
Posted: 9/17/04 at 5:21pmShe just did press last night for the show.

I believe Gwyneth was just on The Daily Show last night. That is sure to be an infamous episode, because of Jon's remark to Gwyneth about his son and Gwyneth's daughter.
Priceless.
