Everyone always thinks smoking can ruin your singing voice, but have you ever heard a smoker sing who had a beautiful voice regardless? Or...even weirder...a singer whose smoking ENHANCED the singing. Like making the voice huskier and scratchier somehow improved the singing.

mickey rourke, who smokes a lot, has a really really really compelling voice. granted, i've never heard him sing, but speaking-wise his voice is really really great.

I think you can have s exy raspy voice without smoking. I think it's a myth to say a voice got better through smoking.
Listen to Joni Mitchell, then and now, to hear how smoking ravages a voice.

Justino Diaz from the Metropolitan Opera smokes and Patti LuPone smoked up until she became pregnant. Her voice improved greatly after that.
