I can answer the writer's question:

He worked for the State Department and frankly anything foreign affairs and Beltway related have a lot of people not being open about their sexuality. There are several different possible reasons why people who work there do that, so I cannot blame Farrow for at the most only being open with colleagues and his bosses like Hillary Clinton behind closed doors. Plus, he's in his mid-twenties and none of his biography shows he had the typical experience of the average American kid growing up. When kids were stressing about prom, he was at Yale Law School. He might have slept with the author's 'friends' but it is also possible he does not fall under the strict binaries of sexuality the author poses.
