so, I have no link to this story, becasue It hasn't been published yet. My source is my younger brother, who is currently serving in the 82nd Airborne in Afghanistan.
He said that he was told that any soldier whose contracts were not finished by March 1, 2009 would be forced to re-enlist and be sent to Iraq for a whole year. Here's the kicker- they can either voluntarily re-enlist, whereupon they would recieve a $7,000 bonus and be sent to Iraq, or not re-enlist, and be sent to Iraq anyway without the $7,000.
What really sucks is that his contract was to be up on March 9, 2009. He missed it by 8 days!!! 8 days!!!
He has to make his decision by March 1 of this year- a whole year in advance.
This really, really sucks, and I feel so bad for him. He was planning on coming home in a month and finishing his contract in Fort Bragg, but now that has apparently all changed.
Again, this is not official - yet.
I don't know when it will be announced, but this is what I found out a few minutes ago from my Mother who talked to him. she is going to foward me the e-mail in a little while, and I will add it to this thread.
