Happy New Year Everyone!

My vocal coach and I will be working on some new songs, and I'd like some suggestions.

I'm a baritone, and 45 years old, and rather imposing looking onstage. I'm strongly built and 6'3" (with rapidly graying hair!?).

We've already worked on "In Praise of Women" and "You Must Meet My Wife" from "A Little Night Music" and "The Impossible Dream" from "Man of LaMancha."

I'm looking for other songs appropriate to my age and physical type. Since I've already have worked up a number of "Loved and Lost" songs...could anyone provide me with some song suggestions for a assertive mature leading man type?

I'm tempted to suggest some "Sweeney Todd," but since a very sucessful local production just closed, I'm afraid that anything from that musical may be a bit over-exposed at this time.

Warmest Regards,

Michael

Camelot, The Bakers Wife, Chess, and Mack and Mabel all have good songs for your type. Also, "Farewell good Angel" from Jane Eyre, and "My Orderly World" from Weird Romance are great songs.

There's always room for pathos - and jazz hands.

If you want a great ballad - I did a song from No Strings called "Look No Further" in my cabaret act - originally done by Richard Kiley in the Broadway production - he was a great character-leading man with a wonderful vocal quality. Also try anything that was originally sung by Howard Keel - perfect for your type.

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

I'd throw in As Good As You from Jane Eyre....Rochester's "character song"

Thank you for the suggestions. I do like the "Jane Eyre" songs. Unfortunately, one of the theatres at which I will audition just produced that musical.

The Howard Keel and Richard Kiley suggestions sound promising. Better hunt down a copy of "No Strings."

Javert's "Stars" from LES MIZ sounds like a perfect number for you. (I don't know how accepting casting directors are of songs from Les Miz, though.)
