Sony's anti-file-sharing CD causes a firestorm of anger

I'm not completely sure what all the lingo means, but this doesn't sound so happy:

"So, let's make this a bit more explicit. You buy a CD. You put the CD into your PC in order to enjoy your music. Sony grabs this opportunity to sneak into your house like a virus and set up camp, and it leaves the backdoor open so that Sony or any other enterprising intruder can follow and have the run of the place. If you try to kick Sony out, it trashes the place." (from second link)

The fact that so many companies are going out of their way to work against Apple only makes me want to exclusively use Apple even more.

Apprently, the only way Sony can figure out how to not allow anyone to make illegal copies is to not allow anyone to make ANY copies.

Meanwhile, through iTunes, they've figured out how to allow only a limited number of burned copies to be made from the file, so you can make personal copies, just not enough to be a financial threat.

Ah, well if the Sony d/l service didn't blow white-hot chunks of suckiness, maybe people would actually use it.

And isn't it funny to see Apple play the Microsoft role in the mp3 world?

Oh, please. Like Apple is being so sweet and nice. They're the ones with something like an 80% market share in portable mp3 players, and a huge interest in keeping every iPod owner using only iTunes, and every iTunes donwloader listening only with an iPod.

Hey, look- I got an iPod in the bad old days when it still had 4 buttons instead of just a click wheel, iTunes was still unavailable for PC, and there was only a Firewire connection option, no USB. I gladly switched to iTunes, because MusicMatch was so abysmally bad it actually corrupted my music files. But that doesn't make Apple a particularly nice company, and more than my relative contentment with Windows makes Microsoft friendly.

Plum, Apple is working to change all their products and make them compatible with PCs and Macs. The other companies are all refusing to make the same accomidations for Apple products.

The fact that they "make" you use iTunes really isn't that bad in comparison. It's a free program that works on almost all computers and it's the best program for organizing music files I've found.

It's not like other companies out there don't also require you to use brand-specific programs to put music on your mp3 player. And programs like Napster and MusicNet and Rukus refuse to accomidate iPods in favor of their own financial backers' products. I just recently lost over 200 songs the other day because MusicNet wouldn't allow me to put their songs on my iPod. I put up with it for awhile and listened to them only on my laptop, but when the program went corrupt, I was out of luck and can't access the files anymore. I've never had any problem like that with iTunes.
