Hey everyone. I have a sore throat, and I was just wondering if any of you have any tips on how to make it better or just preventing them in the first place. I haven't had this one for that long (just for today), but I get them A LOT. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Zicam and lots of Emergen-C
don't whisper
get lots of sleep
Throat coat! I woke up with no voice and a show to do that night, got a message to a friend of mine who I knew had it, downed boatloads of tea during the day, and at lunch he dropped off a package of Throat Coat. Had a cup at lunch, and another right before I left for my call, and had one available backstage just in case, and I was able to do the show just fine.
Other than that, Vitamin C daily keeps me going. And sleep.
don't drink or eat anything with menthol, it will totally dry up your throat, and will make it worse. sugarfree gummy worms strangely are nice to suck on, they do some good things to the throat. steam your head alot. gargle with lukewarm salt water.
STEAMING IS KEY!!!
also, sleep with a humidfier. Anything to get your vocal chords wet!!!
Throat Coat is great. It tastes like hell just died, but nonetheless, it helps.
I second the avoid whispering comment.
aaaaand...suck on candy corn. I know, weird. But it helps!
Does anyone know where you can buy Throat Coat out of curiousty?
Eat rice and drink cranberry juice. It really does help SO much.

Just like the others said, I recommend the Throat Coat Tea. It does taste terrible. I had to plug my nose the first few times I drank it, but you will get used to it. It's worth it. I found it in the Organic section of my grocery store, but you would definitely find it at a health food store. In addition, I recommend Thayer's Throat Lozenges. I found them also in the Organic section, but again, I bet you can get them at the health food store. They are in a small 2x2 orange box, and are recommended for singers. I sang a whole show with one in my mouth. I will warn you though that these also taste terrible. The things we do to put on a show. Hope these help you!
go an run out in the street and start yelling at the top of your lungs about how you have a sore throat... and screech and jump up and down throwing a tantrum... it may not help your throat... but it would be fun...
Throat Coat tea with raw honey. It works wonders. I actually love the taste of Throat Coat, but maybe it's an aquired taste. You can get it at Whole Foods in the tea section.
well gargle with salt water a lot, drink tea and honey, don't whisper, but don't talk either or scream of course and if your lymph nodes are swollen put ice on your throat, but if your lympho nodes aren't swollen, that will do nothing and you could chew gum too cuz that hydrates ur vocal chords...and for preventing sore throats, what i do is i chew gum constantly and i gargle salt water twice a day...once in the morning and once in the evening. it works pretty good.....do you know of any performing arts high schools in Illinois?

REST your voice, which means DO NOT talk! Carry a pad and write when you need to, even in school. Keep well hydrated. lots of H2O and my daughter's teacher and throat MD swear by Musinex (that DISGUSTING commercial). Cold-Eze doesn't taste real great, but it helps too.No dairy products, but tea with honey and lemon helps. DO NOT sing, no matter how mcuh you are tempted and the advice about not whipering was good too. Carry some of that ant-germ gel around and USE it when ever you touch anything "public". Other than thatm just avoid anyone that looks or sounds ill! Good luck!

once I was in a show and the entire cast got a cold. Our music director put a huge cooler of lemonade backstage and made us all drink some. You would think the sugar would make things worse but our throats were better the next day. So, i strongly suggest lemonade and lemon drops. and i second the comments about tea with honey and lemon!! go lemon!

Water and lemon works wonders. It clears everything out .. that, well dosen't need to be there. haha.
Also, the lemon in the little lemon shaped bottle works great too. Make sure you get the one that is REAL lemon juice - not fake. I squirt a little down my throat every morning, and right before I go to rehersal.
Throat coat is awesome too - like everyone else has been saying.

Thank you to whoever recommended throat coat. I was in my school's play, and had to perform all the Soprano soli in the Schubert mass in G. Wednesday nite, my voice was cracking, and I was cryign I was in so much pain. Thursday, after three cups of throat coat, not talking for 5 hours, I was able to perform the soprano soli perfectly.
and I swear by three words.
Singer's Saving Grace.
Tastes like the worst **** in the entire world, I gag everytime I use it, but it is AMAZING.
honey
throat coat
water
throat lozenges (sugar free and no menthol!)
that was my formula, and I just came out of play week!

Find a GOOD throat specialist and establish a baseline with a scoping when you are well. Keep well hydrated (water and tea are great). DO NOT TALK when your throat hurts even if God is asking the question! My daughter carries a sign to school some days, saying, "I am on vocal rest and can't talk, Please wait and I'll write my answer!"- which is happening a lot with 2 shows working at the same time! Run a vaporizer in your room at night and don't forget how useful steam can be (just don't set fir to your hair)!! Above all, if your throat doesn't feel right, don't use it- don't "fill in because they need someone who can hold the harmony", or whatever. IF you must, mark the role and just sing where you absolutely have to(and sing in your proper range, if your a Sop.2, don't sing alto 'cause someone else is out). Also, keep those bottles of hand-sanitzer everywhere, and USE them, while avoiding anyone who even LOOKS ill! good luck!

I would recommend staying away from hand sanitizer containing anti-bacterials. Since they prevent your body from being exposed to an illness, you have no shot at developing any immunity to it, and so lengthens the time your body will need to fight off that particular illness/germ in the future.
Also, while I too have experienced the mircales of Throat Coat, black tea with lemon or honey in it is cheaper, easier to find, better-tasting, and just as effective. Gargling with salt and warm water is also key--every doctor in creation recommends it! Although I have yet to try it myself, eucalyptus is also supposed to be wonderful.
Aloe vera juice, ginger with honey, airborne.
I could give you a laundry list of remedies and cures, but I'm kind of in a hurry. I hope you feel better! =]

One of the best things to do is to get ginger root and chop it up and let it bowl, making it into a tea. After drinking down that... gargle with very warm salt water mixed with some powdered vitamin C and asperin. Trust me.. IT WORKS!!!
