Lou Grant was spun off the character from The Mary Tyler Moore show.
Angel was spun off Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

SNL has spun of a lot of the skits into movies but I think only The Blues Brothers and Waynes World were successful.
I think one of the earliest was December Bride spinning off into Pete and Gladys (REALLY OLD!!!)

Stockardfan.. yup... in a couple episodes... Coach Lubbock was the gym teacher at Mike Seaver's school... and in one episode they fired him and Mike did that protest to save his job and he goes to the coach's home and you meet all the kids... shortly after that episode.. the coach eventually lost his job and was ok with it and then they spun it off to Just the Ten of Us!!!

Extreme Makeover: Home edition is infinitely more successful than Extreme Makeover.
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert

Wasn't Lou Grant pretty famous for switching up the style completely and making it a drama?

Also the character Det. Munch on SVU was on Homicide: Life On The Street which is pretty interesting since the only common trait shared between those shows was that they were both on NBC.

Boston Legal took Spader's character, who closed out The Practice, and was far superior as a show.

While Saved By the Bell wasn't actually a spin off (as was mentioned before) it did have two spin offs. Saved By the Bell: The New Class and Saved by the Bell: The College Years. While TCY didn't last a season I believe TNC did last quite some time. Whether show as good or not can be argued but it was on for 7 seasons.

^ Yeah, they kept replacing some of the kids every season or so. I think they did graduate in the series finale.

Oh yeah, and Dustin Diamond was the only character from the original, including junior high to appear in every series and special. He was missing from the first season of the New Class series though.

Plenty of chicks, apparently. And they were hot, too. I guess former fame (however limited) is an aphrodisiac.

Spinoffs That Actually Worked

Good Times was a successful "sort-of" spin-off of Maude. The show was originally conceptualized as an independent series, but they later decided to feature the leads in Maude. Once Good Times hit the airwaves, the character of James had a different background and there was no mention of Florida or James having ever lived in New York or working for Maude.

Spinoffs That Actually Worked

All In The Family had the most successful spin offs---plus Good Times spinning off Maude, and Checking In spinning off The Jeffersons.

Didn't Promised Land spin off Touched By An Angel?

Screw the critics... and the low rates. 'Joey' kicked ass.
