I'm trying to write about the differences and similarities between "Street smarts" and "book smarts."

If anyone has anything to contribute, maybe some fun stories or help with defining the terms it would be appreciated.

Book smarts = How you SHOULD handle a situation

Street smarts = How you WILL handle a situation

My brother is very book smart. Graduated #11 in his class in high school. NYU Honors program. But he'll put a case of root beer in the freezer.

Street smarts are great, but it still depends upon which street you've lived.

Very true. I don't think my middle class suburban Maryland upbringing is helping me much in the "Please don't let the big scary man from the big city take advantage of me" department. I'm fine scrapping with a dull witted rube but other than that my book smarts aren't doing much for me.

Book smarts are mocked and belittled in contemporary America, ruled as it is by The Isolated Media Queen ("No questions, PLEASE") Sarah Palin, for whom being smart is being "elite," for whom an undistinguished education at multiple colleges is "good enough" and anything better is uppity, stuck up, not trustworthy. In this America, vindictive score settling over any issue minor or major is now considered "street smart", even if the streets are in the Meth Capital of Alaska.

book smarts are often accompanied by the false promise of success

instead all many realize is starting life in the real world burdened by crippling student loan debt
