re: Streisand as... Momma Rose?

Well, I thought Middler made a VERY credible Rose--and I have also seen Lansbury and Daly.

Middler in HELLO, DOLLY!?

Well, for me the one and only Dolly Gallagher Levi is Miss Pearl Bailey!

I thought she turned a mediocre show with one excellent number into a major truimph!!!

I LOVED who she sang COUNTERPART to the waiters during the "Hello, Dolly!" number-- Channing didn't do ANYTHING like that! :)

re: Streisand as... Momma Rose?

The best Rose that never was:

Debbie Reynolds was announced to play in the LA/SF Civic Light Opera production in about 1977.

Regretably CLO went bankrupt the spring before and the production never happened.

Of the ones I have seen (Peters, Daly, Lansbury, Midler, Buckley, Ann Southern) I like Roz Russell in the film the most. She's scary, but you know who is in charge. She's also very funny, again in a scary sort of way. You get the feeling she's these girls' mother.

Hands down, the best Tessie was Mary Louise Wilson who also covered but never went on for Lansbury.

Interesting perspective, WOSQ.

IMO, Russell just wasn't up to the heavy vocal demands of the role. (I mean, Ruth Sherwood is one thing, but Momma Rose is quite another...)

And Our Little Debbie as Momma Rose?

That just isn't developing in MY Camera. :)

P.S. Beaverhausen, please stop pulling my leg about Vicki Lawrence doing HELLO, DOLLY! Pretty soon, you'll start telling me you did summer stock with Marie Osmond as Aldonza in MAN OF LA MANCHA. :)

THANKS, Beaver, for the link regarding your interesting Summer Stock ventures!

HOW Could I Have Doubted You? :)

re: Streisand as... Momma Rose?

I think Joann Worley would make an excellent Rose. Didn't she briefly standby for the role during the Tyne Daly production?

Beav, I'm learning more and more about you everyday.

Linda Lavin was Daly's standby during GYPSY.

And beav... forget Oprah!

You need your OWN talk show!!! :)

Mary Ethel, if I'm not mistaken, Linda Lavin replaced Tyne (I had friends in the show). I also witnessed that unfortunate performance from Lavin. Jana Robbins was the understudy and she was great (I saw her first performance).

re: Streisand as... Momma Rose?

Beav - we saw Mariette Hartley in Enchanted April down here in Pasadena - she was wonderful! Then we met her afterwards, and she was absolutely charming - very down to earth and gracious. We liked her a lot re: Streisand as... Momma Rose?

re: Streisand as... Momma Rose?

Beav - yes, it's adapted from the movie. It played NYC 2 years ago, I think, and then they did it at the Playhouse here last season. She was the older woman (obviously make-up aged somewhat, but a lot she just did with her body - and especially her voice.) We love the film, and were amazed at how well the transfer to stage was made.

re: Streisand as... Momma Rose?

The movie is wonderful and beautiful - with Miranda Richardson and Joan Plowright - a truly special one. You should definitely look for it!

re: Streisand as... Momma Rose?

Beav - one of our bigger disappointments is being unable to get our hands on the soundtrack. It has a beautiful score, but the printing on the recording was very limited - and therefore very rare by now. If we ever DO see one available, I hope we show some restraint if it's astronomically priced - but I wouldn't bet on it re: Streisand as... Momma Rose?

... thought we were discussing Streisand playing Rose in GYPSY?

Somehow, we surged into BEAVERHAUSEN: THE SUMMER STOCK YEARS! :)

M_E - ya gotta go where the spirit takes ya!

By the way, I TRULY agree about Pearl in Dolly. A friend of mine saw that production, and says it was one of the best nights in a theatre he's ever had. Goes ON AND ON about the chicken eating scene re: Streisand as... Momma Rose?

OK Beav, it's my turn to eat, so watch the comments. By the way, what do you think of my icon (finally)?

re: Streisand as... Momma Rose?

Thank you. I think she totally embodies what Dottie D'Luscia would look like in her showgirl prime. I was thinking of putting out a press release, but I didn't want to toot my own horn.

Wait, Mary Ethel come back!!!

Barbra Streisand as Mama Rose, eh, I don't know. I might be one of the few who actually liked her in Hello, Dolly. (*runs for cover*)
