I’m currently a senior in high school, and a few of my theatre friends are interested in putting on a very small musical early this summer. We understand that this is a huge undertaking expecially because we’ll have very little money to work with. We have a couple of community theatres in town that are willing to house us for a night if we give them our profits. We are doing this production completely for the love of theatre, so we’re as not for profit as you can get. Our show possibilities are you’re a Good man Charlie Brown, the Apple Tree, Bat Boy, or The Fantasticks. Do companies like MTI make any special licensing arrangements for situations like ours? If anyone has done something like this and has any advice to give PLEASE share. Thanks!

As far as I know, no liscense company makes special agreements where you don't have to pay. You may pay a lesser fee determined by the number of performances and seating. Contact MTI. But don't expect it for free. You may also look at Samuel French.

There are NO special licensing arrangements for this type of a thing; but there should be.

When I was a freshman a senior did Jekyll and Hyde and he had to save a lot of money to put it on and a couple years before someone did L5Y, which at the time was really really popular so the rights were ridiculously expensive and it put him in debt right before college and he hasn't recovered.

advice: choose the show wisely (apple tree and fantasticks sound good) and split the costs.
