Most shows have rush policies. Generally, you show up 2 1/2 hrs before showtime and enter your name. One entry per person. Some shows are one ticket per entry, some two. Draw is done 2 hrs before showtime and if you're chosen you need to line up and show photo i.d. and pay with cash. Cost varies from show to show but is usually in the $20-25 range. Keep in mind that lotto for some shows is EXTREMELY popular and chances of winning at ANY lotto can be slim depending on the day (especially during spring break weeks). If there's a particular show that you really want to see, especially if you're travelling from Alabama, consider ordering ahead, maybe looking into student tix.
Hotels are pricy. The cheapest option is the hostel already mentioned but it fills up quickly. Other inexpensive options are places like the Edison, Milford Plaza (awful), have a look at travelocity or orbitz for your best prices then check here with names to see what people think. If you're going with a group of people you can split the cost and get something decent for a few days.
