So, I applied for a program and got in. All that is left is clicking that I accept my acceptance.
I need inspiring stories of going abroad so I feel 100% about this!
I know I will love it, but its also a matter of agreeing to put myself in debt after graduation...and of leaving everything for 4 months.
So, come on! Convince me of my right decision!

what country?
I've known several people who went to France as exchange students and had bad experiences.
This is a wonderful chance to see the world from a different perspective. We have hosted two wonderful guys from Germany while they were at the University.
My son went to France and came back so happy just loving the whole experience.
Do it you'll be so glad you did!
When I was 15, I decided to go to school abroad as an exchange student for one year. It sounds clichéd to say that it changed my life, but it really did. I ended up staying where I went for a lot longer than the one year, but even if I hadn't done so, I can't tell you enough about the incredible experience you get when you're taken out of your regular environment and get a chance to analyze and look at things from a different perspective. Out of the group who went with me, the only people who had a miserable time were those who were unwilling to adapt and chose to only spend time with people from their respective home countries. So... if you allow it, the experience will be incredible, and will definitely be worth the investment. Good luck! I hope you go ahead and have a great time! Updated On: 10/11/04 at 10:03 AM
I spent a semester living in Rome, Italy, and it was an incredible experience.
I have friends that have studied in Spain, France, Ireland, England, and Austria.
Not one of them regretted it.
(Side note: One of my best friends has been accepted to an abroad program in Cairo for next semester.
I think he's going to go.
Part of me hopes he does, because I know he would learn so much from it.
But I'm not going to lie - with the current situation there, I'm worried for his safety.
So I guess the country you would be studying in has a lot to do with how strongly I can give a recommendation.)

Many of my students have studied abroad. They all found it to be a wonderful experience. My husband studied abroad while in law school and absolutely loved it. However, I agree with FF that you may want to reconsider going if you will be studying in an unstable country.

I'm also curious to know what country...
The summer I graduated high school I went on a study abroad program to London. It was ONE OF THE BEST experiences of my life. I had a wonderful time, and it really opened my eyes to all sorts of new things.
I really think you should do it. It will change your life in so many ways, and if you pass up the opportunity, you might not be able to do it in the future. It's worth the leap of faith, trust me!
I'm planning to go abroad in New Zealand next fall. I can't wait, I think it'll be a great experience.
i've never studied abroad but based on my experiences as a visitor and all of the reviews I've heard from friends who have done it, it has potential to be as wonderful as you'll be open for. there is so much to gain just by removing yourself from your element. and if you go somewhere with great things, all the better.
i'm looking forward to doing Semester At Sea probably in Spring '06. goes all over the globe in 4 months.

OOPS - I just re-read the title of this thread - silly me - I thought it was about studying a broad...LOL...silly possums!
okay, that was a reach, even for you...
Millie, i remember my first couple of trips to Italy, we stayed for several days, in Bologna... there were many american students around, and while sitting on the steps of San Petronio, we met several, and they pretty much all stated the same about how much they loved the experience, learning the language, and seeing the world from a intellectual and physical point of view... i say go, have fun, write often!!!

redhot - I'm all tingly now!!
Thanks, guys! Sometimes you just need the extra encouragement to do big things.
I'll be studying in London so the stability factor is not an issue. (~FF~ my best friend from middle school is planning to study in Cairo too!)
Redhot... LOL. It was cheesy, but I still found it funny!
thank you - I thought so myself - and look - at least I got Rath all tingly!
So your work here is done, redhot. *still tingling*
Thanks, redhot! It is the perfect time of day for a "laugh-out-loud" so that everyone in my office area can look at the new guy and wonder what the heck he's doing!
On topic...Go abroad! Take the chance and be open to the experience!!!!
I studied abroad during college (program in London), and then did some post-graduate work in a program in Paris. Both experiences were life-enriching.
I encourage anyone who has the opportunity to study abroad to do so! Go with an open mind and a sense of adventure!
I would say go for it. When I go to college, I plan to study abroad, possibly in Spain. How often is it you go to another country? You get to interact with other people from another culture. It'll most likely be frustrating at first because you are getting used to a new culture (culture shock).

London?! Go for it! We look forward to reading all about your adventures.
Ooooh! Do it! London! West End! Woo-hoo!
But I must warn you that England was the most expensive country I have ever been in. My friend Jenny bought a Coke, and after taxes and some conversion math, we realized that it cost her about $6 (they say that it's "imported". *rolls eyes*)
