Ha ha!
Oh, well, what can I say. I used to sing that song and thought it was wonderful until I came to NYC and got so SICK of Cats. Everybody coming here wanted you to go see Cats with them. Once was plenty.

One: I hate the musical Cats so much!
Two: I love Susan Boyle! Her rendition of I Dreamed a Dream is incredible.
Three: the combination of Memory and Susan Boyle just did not work for me. I really wish she had chosen something else. If that had been her first song, I don't think she would have been such a huge sensation. Sorry, but true.

Posted: 5/25/09 at 9:49amIf she had had a performance like her first one, there would be no suspense for the finals. I don't know who chose this song for her, but it was not a good one. And she was making surprising mistakes given her beautiful pitch and color during "I Dreamed a Dream." I hope the finals show her in better form, as on a good night she has a stunning voice.

So this girl's niche is going to be terribly overcooked British 1980's megamusical ballads?
I can't wait to hear her take on "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina"!

Posted: 5/25/09 at 12:29pmYeah- I saw her rendition of Memory and it was not great! She looked really good and she did hit the high note at the end. It just wasn't a strong performance. I thought the judges were being VERY easy on her!

Oooops. Brainfart.
I meant "terribly overcooked 1980s British megamusical ballads".

Posted: 5/25/09 at 1:29pmThough Les Mis is technically French, I consider it British because it rose to prominence in England and I connect the whole "1980s megamusical" thing with Cameron Mackintosh.

#16re: Susan Boyle, Second Night Let Down?
Posted: 5/25/09 at 4:56pmShe had some false notes and she wobbled a bit, but for the most part, she could kick my ass any day in karaoke so who the hell am I to judge?

Well, she was clearly really nervous... but also, I think it's clear that "I Dreamed A Dream" was her best and favorite song, and she'd probably practiced it a ton more times than any of her other songs. Everyone was so blown away by "I Dreamed A Dream" that she'd have to top it by a lot to get the same reaction.
Still, I liked her rendition of the song after the first verse or so. I've always hated this song-- and I actually really like CATS-- but I think she sounds pretty nice, especially the last verse, which sounds incredibly shrieky when most people sing it.
And I like what she's had done with her eyebrows.

The Empress has no clothes.
This performance proves what many people have said all along. This woman is a very moderately talented singer, with absolutely NO stage presence, who would be welcome in any church choir. And NOTHING more.
