An org at my college that I am heavily involved in is putting on Sweeney Todd, one of my all-time favorite musicals. Usually, I end up stage managing, but Mrs. Lovett has been a dream role of mine since junior high and I am dying to audition.
I did a lot of acting way back in high school, and was even the lead in one or two musicals there, but it's been awhile. My acting is pretty good (better than a lot of the people who I've seen audition for the show), I'm good at character voices, and I have a really god ear for complicated timing within songs.
My singing is...decent. I can hold harmonies and keep on time with the music without sounding tone deaf. But my range isn't the most fantastic and I haven't had to sing for a musical in 4 years so I am tragically out of practice.
Anyone have any suggestions for audition songs that could help play up my "character strengths" and downplay the fact that there may be better singers auditioning? I have the talent and passion to pull off a Lovett and I know I can show the director that if I can make it into callbacks.
Thanks!
