Posted: 8/9/05 at 11:15pmJust saw the Matthew Broderick/Marlon Brando 1990 film "The Freshman" and got confused in the end. It sounds like litteraly everything in the movie was set-up, but I am not sure exactly how. Anyone who has seen this film, I would really love to hear an explanation. Thanks!

Posted: 8/10/05 at 7:52amThe whole thing with the FBI is not a "set-up". The Gourmet Club is a scam - they are never actually eating endangered animals. Brando and his associates don't know for sure that the FBI is investigating them, but they really don't care, since they aren't really doing anything illegal, except deceiving rich, obnoxious, decadent snobs.

Au Contraire! Brando uses the FBI to stage his own death and thus escape the mafia/gourmet club and live a peaceful life. He chooses Broderick because he knows his step father will get the FBI involved.
A wonderful movie from start to finish. I never would have guessed Brando has such an exquisite sense of humor about himself. And Broderick scenes shepharding the lizard around! And what about Max Von Sydow & B.D. Wong spoofing themselves? "Carmine said one boy. Here are TWO boys!"
I LOVE this movie!

Thanks. Some of that I already knew, but it's much clearer now. Merci.
Oh, agreed, it was a great movie! (AFI Top 100 Laughs nominee, too.)
