This may come as a surprise to those of you not living in Las Vegas, but there are more Catholic churches there than casinos. Not surprisingly, some worshippers at Sunday services will give casino chips rather than cash when the basket is passed.
Since they get chips from so many different casinos, the churches have devised a method to collect the offerings. The churches send all their collected chips to a nearby Franciscan Monastery for sorting and then the chips are taken to the casinos of origin and cashed in.
This is done by the Chip Monks.

The 'chip monks' is a hoot - but the rest of the story is true. My folks moved to Las Vegas about 20 years ago and they attended services at the cathedral on Las Vegas Boulevard for years. They always saw a lot of chips in the collection plate.
(By the way, if you're ever in LV that cathedral is a nifty place to visit and see the stained glass windows. There's one to the right side of the altar that shows the LV strip as it appeared when the cathedral was built. Most of the casinos around at that time are gone now. Each of those windows was contributed by a leading LV resident - most of whom were headliners in the casino showrooms.)
