I just found out about this. I can't wait to see what she does with it, and what a cast in place already...Helen Mirren as a female Prospero? Yes, please.
I think of all of Shakespeare's plays, THE TEMPEST probably lends itself best to the visual worlds that Taymor creates.

I'll certainly give it a shot! The potential cast is pretty jaw-dropping.
Oh, yeah, just read that most of the actors are "in negotiations"...
I certainly hope it comes together.

Yeah I'm not immediately crazy about "Prospera" but definitely curious about it. The Tempest is my favorite Shakespeare play.
I would go see her production of almost anything, but this is really exciting.
There's a "masque" in the 4th Act that immediately precedes the "Revels now are ended" speech. The masque almost NEVER works in contemporary productions, because it's so rooted in the showmanship and mythology of Jacobean court spectacle.
But if anyone could make something like that magical, it's Julie Taymor.
Helen Mirren as "Prospera" could also be magical...for a father to watch his innocent daughter fall in love is dramatic, but for a mother (and a mother played by Helen Mirren), it could be breathtaking.

Perhaps with her extravagence she's better suited for the deep pockets of film.

I loved the masque in Peter Greenaway's "Prospero's Books." Music by Michael Nyman, and Ute Lemper as Ceres.
It's shortened in the film, but the sound track has the entire piece. Ravishing!
That damned PROSPERO'S BOOKS needs to be on DVD. NOW!!
I wasn't crazy about Taymor's TITUS...in fact, I haven't been crazy about a lot of her stuff. All neato visual flair, no storytelling skill.
I agree with both statements, Borstal!
Mind you, the same could be said for Peter Greenaway. But I somehow ended up loving "Prospero's Books" whereas I was left cold by "Titus."

I could never get through that film, but I do love The Tempest. I'm just not crazy about Taymor's films thus far.
I don't blame you in the least, Mr. M.
I love it, but I couldn't justify my feelings about it. I can certainly see someone just throwing up their hands after five minutes.
Taymor has already tackled Tempest--I remember watching a video in college about her production that used a hand puppet for Ariel and Caliban emerged from a huge sane dune and wore a full head mask/cage...very cool, but I tend to agree with the other posters who think she's all style and no substance.
Reginald - I can certainly identify. I have a similar affection for Gothic, though I'm not particularly a Ken Russell fan.
If it's anything like Titus with Hopkins and Lange and I can't wait!
This was the best news of my LIFE.
True story.
It was a New Guinea Mud Man mask Caliban wore and he broke it with a piece of drift wood when "frees" himself.
Julie does create wonderful tableaux it is her story telling and character development that leaves a lot to be desired. She is really not known for directing actors, just ask Anthony Hopkins!
