re: Teachers: To Teach or Not to Teach, That is the Question...

Like I said, my school is weird. I know it's highly unusual for a high school to offer neither geometry nor trigonometry. Though we did learn some trig as part of analysis. I was in one of the easier math sequences in my high school-

1. Analysis I
2. Analysis II
3. Calc I
4. Calc II

Calc I and Calc II is something like all of Calc AB plus half of Calc BC, so I did alright for myself considering math is my worst subject besides chemistry. When I went to college I placed like someone who'd passed Calc AB.

A higher-level math track in my high school was BC Calc junior year and linear algebra or some such thing for seniors. The kids who were beyond that did independent math research, which is mildly frightening to contemplate.

Okay, so being a High School Math / CompSci teacher, I think it is important to learn most math topics. Students might not see the practical applications immediately, but it is helping them become better people, more educated, and problem solvers. So, you might not directly apply calculus to your life, but the problem solving skills that you will inherintly learn from the course you will use. And obviously if you become a physicis, computer scientist, engineer, etc. you will use it. And hey, ask and lighting, scenic, designer if they use calculus/geometry/algebra!!!
