Tectonic Theater Project's 'Laramie Residency' in Boston

Just back from a marathon day seeing both the original Laramie Project and the first staged performance ever of The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later as part of the incredible inaugural Arts Emerson project in Boston.

Revisiting the first piece was just terrific, I saw Tectonic do it after the New York run at Berkeley Rep ten years ago. My memories of it were so fresh that I was able to see the nuances and bursts of brilliance you notice only when you're making a journey you've taken before.

I wasn't sure what to expect of "Ten Years Later," I knew Tectonic revisited Laramie to see where things were on the 10th anniversary of the Matthew Shepard murder. There were a few revelations that surprised me but I was completely unprepared for them to explore some deep philosophical questions about how stories come to be told and memories altered that have been bothering me a lot lately. What Tectonic came up with is something that's ostensibly about the aftershocks of nationwide attention over a hideous crime but is really about how our culture comes to believe what it believes. It took my breath away.

My son did that show this past spring. They had a rep from the Matthew Shephard Foundation come to speak to the kids and they had talk-backs after the shows. Reverend Phelps (wich was one the parts my son played) threatened to protest the show but he never showed up. Namo- sounds like you had a great experience- thanks for sharing!

We attended one of the readings done last year, and I would really like to see a fully staged production. The script is incredible.
