I think this is a very strong message and needed to happen. This struck me, however:
"Outside of court, Dawn Boldrin, a teacher who gave King her daughter's homecoming dress..."
Jesus, what was going ON at this school?? Sounds like the whole establishment had boundary issues.

How could the jurors say this wasn't a hate crime?
I guess it has to do with the defense pushing that Larry was "sexually harassing" him. Though, I did some googling and found no real examples of any "harassment" other than references of Larry blowing him kisses and saying "I love you". No idea how often it happened. Though, imagine if a woman shot every guy who did that to her.
One of the articles I read talked about how "emotionally immature" Larry was and how nice and polite Brandon is.
So, that's just my guess.

The 'harrassment' was really defiance. He had already been harrassed by McKinerney for being gay, and instead of rolling over, he fought back by actually being who he was publicly. His 'advances' were nothing more than gestures of mocking defiance - but in our general culture, and specifically that in the region this occurred, that is entirely unacceptable. One only has to look at the interviews with jurors after the mistrial to see where their attitudes were.
This whole scenario really does point out that, at least in certain areas, it is still a great crime (against God, presumably) simply for gay people to exist.

Posted: 12/20/11 at 9:26amThe whole thing is just a mess with very few people taking any ownership of what happened. The victim's dad blaming the school for not curtailing his son's behavior. The defense blaming the school for not protecting Brandon from Larry. Larry being painted as "the bully". Oh, what a circus.

Posted: 12/20/11 at 11:27amI agree that this is a mess. I feel that there is lack of accountability on all angles. I think that it was wrong for the teacher to give King a dress for the school dance. And, I think that it is wrong for King's father to feel that the school was responsible to parent his own child.

Is that what you took out of that? Because I was thinking, 'Now here is a teacher who sees a child who is crying out for acceptance, and she showed him some.'

Her heart was definitely in the right place and it's nice that she tried when you often hear stories of teachers who just kinda "coast".

TheatreDiva,
If she wanted to show her support and show that she cared for King, then there were much better and appropriate ways of doing it then giving him a dress to wear. Just because it's helping doesn't mean that it isn't crossing a line as well.
