The "What Am I Doing With My Life?" Thread

I've been having existential crises several times a day for the past few months.

It's always career-related. What should I really do with my life? Sometimes it seems like everyone else has it figured out, and I can't seem to settle on one career for the rest of my working life.

Anyone else feel this particular pressure?

Yep. I finally settled on a career I love, but can't yet pay my bills with. So I'm fulfilled yet constantly panicked. Fortunately I'm starting a supplemental job at the end of August.

What are you doing, and what is your passion?

Hey Rath. I'm an actor- mainly musical theatre. Working on getting into tv/film.

But, I work at an architectural firm, and I'm surrounded by architects and designers who seem to love what they've chosen to do.

Passion-wise, performing is IT for me, but yes, it's stressful when considering the money situation.

I've been looking into all sorts of grad schools, but even then, I don't know EXACTLY what I'd study. I've narrowed it down though.

Does it make sense to go into debt for grad school? If you're doing well with the acting, and starting to get into TV/film, and your job allows you to work around that, then you're probably in the right place, and luckier than many. Yes, your coworkers love what they do, but so do you - you LOVE acting. Stick with it, unless there is something you love just as much. Is there?

I totally agree with you. I'm v.v. lucky to have a survival job that allows me to audition AND have health insurance and paid vacation.

I'm doing fairly well with acting- my ethnicity limits what I get called in for, but I'm in callbacks for a couple nat'l tours. I need more patience is really what it is. There's SO much waiting around.

And no, there isn't anything I love AS MUCH as performing.

I'm currently a psych major and I don't have any idea what to do with it. I don't want to be a psychologist, and I don't have the patience or money to go to grad school. I love to sew, but how could I make a career out of that? And would doing that take all the fun out of it for me? For the love of God, someone help me!!

Hmmm...if you love to sew, you could go into costume design, fashion design, etc. I think you might need some courses or a certificate in design though.

With your psych degree, you could also go into human resources, or work in a large corporation (such as advertising or marketing), where knowledge of how the mind works is key in selling a final product.

Well, don't ask me!LOL...I've been having my crisis for at least 6 months if not the past few years - I'm 43 and have absolutely no idea what my career should be. I used to be very marketable as a singer/actor - but then something happened and suddenly I stopped getting cast in things. Now I have no idea what else I am passionate about. It's a conundrum for sure!

Cheno, welcome to the club.

I'm presently sitting at my desk wondering how I ever got here.

Unfortunately, sometimes job security, benefits, etc. stand in the way of what are passions really are. I really got sucked into complacency and can't seem to find a way out.

same thing happened to me at my last two jobs - but having the life sucked out of you (For all the wrong reasons) is just not healthy - we need to follow our bliss, whatever that is.

Well, I am getting a degree. So, I will have something on which to fall back if the playwriting doesn't bear fruit.

But, what major have I picked? Something useful and likely to earn money?

Hmm. What do Classics majors do after University?

So, what am I doing with my life? I am sitting here replying to threads on a message board. At least I'm having fun.
