A brilliant comedian. The Lavender Hill Mob, Kind Hearts And Coronets, and of course The Ladykillers.

That marvelous moment in "River Kwai" when he has a moment of clarity and says, "What have I done?"

My all-time favorite film of his is The Horse's Mouth.

re: The Alec Guinness Love Thread

Even on the rare occasions when he was miscast (A PASSAGE TO INDIA and A MAJORITY OF ONE come to mind) he was brilliant.

I think my favorite is KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS.
Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

There will be those who praise his brilliant work in brilliant projects - and rightfully so.

I will always have him in my head for two wildly non-important roles.

Obi-Wan, in which he channeled my grandfather, who is my hero in life.

And in MURDER BY DEATH, in which he participated with Nancy Walker in one of the funniest scenes I have ever seen in a movie.

Oh, THE HORSE'S MOUTH is brilliant! The book is great, too! Love, love, LOVE Alec Guinness! Do catch his utterly un-PC Fagin in OLIVER TWIST.

Guinness RULES. I love the Ealing Studios films a lot, esp KIND HEARTS, LADYKILLERS and LAVENDER HILL MOB. I used to like the film of HORSE'S MOUTH until I read the novel, and now I can't watch it anymore.

His battle of wills with the equally brilliant Sessue Hayakawa in BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI is the real reason to see the film. That moment after he's released from solitary, where he barely manages to walk upright across the camp is one of the highlights of movie acting for me.

I've always loved his transparent joy in acting. Even as we're enjoying his performance, it was always clear that he was enjoying crafting his performance--and I don't mean that in any self-congratulatory or artificial sort of way.

Just the delight an artist can have while making art.
