Since nothing else is on TV...I'm watching "The Waterboy" on ABC Family and it just amazes me how Kathy Bates is able to take any role and make it fantastic.
I've seen this movie a few times, but I never really focused on Bates. She has so much fun with the role. I was cracking up during the scene when she's dancing for the news cameras.
I don't think I've ever seen her in a role that she didn't dominate in.
One must also acknowledge her wonderful performances in "Misery," "Titanic," and "Warm Springs."
Any favorite roles of yours?
loved her in FRIED GREEN TOMATOES.
and delighted to see her in SIX FEET UNDER.
I've enjoyed her work in a number of things but I have to say that I still think that her best work was when I first saw her and that was back in 1983 on Broadway as Jessie Cates in 'night, Mother.
oh i bet she was brilliant in that, pab.
I watched a Home of Our own recently...Qute unsettling, and then uplifting, and then unsettling again, and then triumphant!
I've loved her in everything, really - like you said, she always manages to give that something extra special.
One role that stands out, because she never got the recognition she deserved for it, was in PRIMARY COLORS. I came out of that movie thinking, "Kathy Bates is going to win an Oscar for this!"...and she wasn't even nominated. I just thought she was so compelling in that, and even though she wasn't the lead, she was what I remember most from that movie.
BwayLover, I think Kathy Bates was nominated for an Oscar for Primary Colors (Best Supporting Actress).
I was surprised she didn’t receive any serious award attention for Dolores Claiborne.

She was nominated for Primary Colors and lost to Judi Dench for Shakespeare in Love
Oh. Oops. Well, she should have won then!

loves me some Kathy!
pab, I am extremely jealous. I would have loved to have seen her originate the role of Jessie Cates. I've heard the original production of the show was so haunting, as it should be.
Seeing as her film career doesn't seem to be hitting many high points as of late, do you think Ms. Bates would consider a return to Broadway? I'm sure she would be welcomed with open arms.
