re: The Andrew Sisters

LOVE THEM.........one of a kind!

Of all the boys I've known, and I've known some
Until I first met you, I was lonesome
And when you came in sight, dear, my heart grew light
And this old world seemed new to me

You're really swell, I have to admit you
Deserve expressions that really fit you
And so I've racked my brain, hoping to explain
All the things that you do to me

Bei mir bist du schn, please let me explain
Bei mir bist du schn means you're grand
Bei mir bist du schn, again I'll explain
It means you're the fairest in the land

Sorry Elphaba but Andrews Sisters Land is not so bad, right?
And, dang I know that it's not Andrew. I'm just shell shocked from this intense past season. Thanks for helping me. :)

Two really fun recordings: Look for Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters singing Cole Porter's "Don't Fence Me In" and Danny Kaye and the Andrews Sisters singing "Civilization (Bongo, Bongo, Bongo)"

The Andrews Sisters are more fun than the Boswell Sisters.

The Boswells are high art. Their "Shine On, Harvest Moon" is like a one-act play.

In addition, Connee Boswell holds the distinction of being the singer who inspired and was imitated by BOTH the young Ella Fitzgerald and the young Judy Garland.

How could a Judy/Ella fan not genuflect for Connee Boswell?

Ella Fitzgerald, CBS news interview compilation aired at the time of her death:
On amateur night at the Apollo in 1934, on a dare, a teenaged Ella Fitzgerald froze on her turn in the spotlight. "The man said, 'Do something!' and so I tried to sing like Miss Connie Boswell, and somebody in the audience said, 'That little girl can sing!' and I won first prize!" (Ella Fitzgerald, Lost Chords, Richard Sudhalter, Oxford University Press, 1999). "I know that Connie Boswell was doing things that nobody else was doing at the time. You don't have to take my word for it. Just check the recordings made at the time and hear for yourself."

Check out Abbott & Costello's "Buck Privates" on DVD if you want to see the Andrews Sisters perform "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" in their prime. Not to mention they are actually in the movie as characters.

Kind of makes you nostalgic for the days when talent was more important than looks. They would never make it today... And it makes me wonder what fabulous singers are not getting a chance because they don't look like Shakira.

PEACE.

Well, they weren't exactly dog-faced, Sueleen, but they didn't pose a threat to Ingrid Bergman either.

Patty Andrews (the lead singer) was considered quite the "looker" in her day, and their faces were plastered everywhere. She was linked with all the "hot" leading men in the gossip columns, and was a favorite pin-up in WWII. And I think Maxene looks a LOT like Joan Leslie, a Warner Bros. star from that era. But then there's Laverne. Poor Laverne. She looks just like a "Laverne," God love her. The "no frills" oldest sister.

If you get a chance to see them in Buck Privates, you'll see that they had a definite "sexiness" going for them. They were hot when they performed, and it wasn't just their music.

You're right that they probably wouldn't get a record deal today because they didn't look like perfect specimens. Neither would the Pointer Sisters, for the same reason. They weren't posing any visual threat to Diana Ross in their day, either. Ain't it sad?

EDIT: Speaking of the Andrews Sisters... did anyone out there see "Over Here" on Broadway starring 2 of the 3 Andrews Sisters? (Poor Laverne had passed on.) Plus John Travolta, Treat Williams and Marilu Henner as newbies?

I love OVER HERE! Fun show with great music too. I would love to see Encores! tackle it.
