The Bedroom Tivo has died!

The directv Tivo reciever in the bedroom now displays a sign saying " SEVERE INTERNAL ERROR". I just called them and they are replacing it..... But with a refurbished one. Now.. I have heard of people fixing these things on their own.... ( which I would prefer). Anyone out there that can help me?
