Can anyone recommend? (And, no, I neither live in NYC nor have the budget for LaDuca's, though I know they're superior.) I'm especially interested in something with a slightly flared heel. I have seen the So Danca CH57, and they seem great. Can anyone do better than that? Thanks in advance!

hey hanna....what kind of movement will you be doing in your characters? It all depends on what you're doing, how high you need the heel, and how much you have to spend. I would suggest you take a look at catalog sites like Discount Dance or Dance Distributors. A few commonly used brands are Capezio and Leo's, both of which you can find in either catalog. Check out the Capezio "student footlight". If I were you I would get at least a 2" heel. You mentioned a flared heel? Look at the Latin ballroom shoes also. If you want something a bit more expensive go to the Capezio home site. They have shoes available there that are geared more to the professional performer. Hope this helps.......if you want to know anything else feel free to ask. I've worked with lots of shoes!
