Son/Gunn- What did you think of Simon Carrington's directing techniques?
I have worked under him on two different occasions in the past year and I have to say that he is one of the best choral directors I've ever met. The man is amazing, and knows exactly what he wants. PLUS, he takes no prisoners, which I love. In a choir of ten thousand, if you aren't doing something right...he will pick you out of the crowd and embarass the hell out of you. I love it!
I love choral music.
I sing with a choir in Washington, DC (about 200 voices strong).
My favorites are the Verdi Requiem and the Brahms Requiem. I'm excited because we have 3 performances of Verdi in the Spring at the Kennedy Center.
oooh, well, I missed this thread until now! I'm in the Glen Ellyn Children's Chorus...

Just got back from a performance of Mozart's Requiem. It wasn't quite a knockout, but it was very, very nice. It's a shame the stage was too small to fit the full orchestra as well as the full choir.
I just started the Faure Requiem in my high school choir. It'll be a great challenge for us, and I have the baritone solo. It's such a dynamic piece and it allows us to grow as a choir.
Choir nerds rock on!
ive also sung set me as a seal. BEATIFUL song.

LOve This THRread!
I have been singing in choirs all my life and recently got back into it out here in California with the West Coast Singers (www.westcoastsingers.org)
Chichester Psalms, Britton's Ceremony of Carols, Penderecci(sp?), R. Thompson's Alleluia, Ezekiel Saw the WHeel, tons of Rutter stuff, and on and on.
Woo Hoo!
I absolutely love choral music. I love singing in choirs too. I sing with my college choir, and have for many years. Right now we're doing the christmas thing. We're doing the Vivaldi Gloria, de Victoria's version of Ave Maria and O Magnum Mysterium (these two are absolutely gorgeous) and a bunch of light english carols. I think it's one of the greatest things in the world to ba part of a choir. Not only do you get to experience the beautiful sounds of harmony, but you get a taste of music you wouldn't normally hear in everyday life.
Okay, thanks for letting me talk. (Isn't the little boy in the picture the cutest you've ever seen? That is my adorable nephew Zack)

i love this one Vivaldi song... i'll have to find out what it's called... it's full of solos with a chorus with a full choir. it is really great and enjoyable! i had a bunch of the solos in that too and it is one of my fave's to sing in choir!
That's totally awesome. Vivaldi has a lot of great pieces, choral and non-choral. Let me know when you find out which piece you were talking about. I'd like to take a listen to it.
We are currently working on Finzi's In Terra Pax for Christmas. It's gorgeous. We are doing so well that our director has given us several more pieces to learn (to keep our sight-reading up) which are gorgeous if not terribly difficult. This Christmastide is one of those. Just a really beautiful arrangement. I will definately pull it back out when I am a choir teacher one of these days.
son, that's a beautiful piece. I've sung it a number of times.
I'm working on a program entitled "Remembering the Dream: A Celebration of Freedom", which will be performed on January 17th.
The performance will include the following:
Agnus Dei from the Mass for Four Voices -- William Byrd
Agnus Dei from Mass in G -- F. Poulenc
Dona nobis pacem from Mass in D -- J. K. Paine
Stabat mater -- G. B. Pergolesi
3 Choruses from “Elijah” -- F. Mendelssohn
Os Justi -- A. Bruckner
Hope There Is -- C. Maclean
Advance Democracy -- B. Britten
‘Tis Not Too Late (Commissioned Piece, premiere)
Prisoner’s Chorus from Fidelio -- L. v. Beethoven
Song for Athene -- J. Tavener
Four Spirituals from “A Child of Our Time” -- M. Tippett
Soon I Will be Done -- arr. W. Dawson
...everybody in the NYC area is welcome to attend!
I was just informed this weekend that the choir I sing with in DC has been invited to sing at The Kennedy Center Honors. I'm really excited about this!!!
Saw a live performance of the Brahms Requiem yesterway at NJPAC yesterday. NJ Symphony Orchestra and the Westminster Symphonic Choir. 'Twas wonderful!
The Brahms Requiem is a beautiful piece of music.
Especially the second movement....so dark.
Yes, you're right. I'm not sure which movement I like the best, but there are certain phrases of the music that I especially love singing. I performed it this past April and I'm so happy we had 3 opportunities to sing it.
I got back from all day of singing in the choir. we are singing Ubi Caritas
Pueri Haebraeorum
Little Beggarman
Best of Rooms
Heavens are telling

does anyone know "What Sweeter Music" by Rutter? It is absolutely gorgeous!! I also love the Rutter Requiem as well. I got the chance to perform it at Carnegie Hall under his direction. I think "The Lord is My Shepard" is my all time favorite.
