As much as I enjoyed reading the book, I was dismayed to see that Ron Howard was going to direct. I have always found Ron Howard films to be rather pedestrian. BEAUTIFUL MIND, for all the hoopla was really rather middle of the road (specially when the surprize ending happened half way through the film!), as were all his other ones.
Add to that Tom Hanks and you have a recipe for a bland, though perhaps big Box Office film.

I think Hanks has definetly reached the end of the road. He's a good actor, but The Terminal definetly wasn't a good pick, but maybe he'll surprise us.
I'm not as bothered over Howard directing as I am over Hanks starring. Ron's had one relatively notable action film under his name - "Ransom" - so I don't think he's all drama and fuzzy feelings. However, I do think it would be a bit too..."generic action" if that makes any sense.
My directing wish list would have been Brian De Palma or Ridley Scott though. I think the former would have nailed the grittier aspects, and the latter would have more artistic vision in an aesthetic sense.
Tiff, "Generic Action" is sort of what I meant by pedestrian. I do agree with rather having Ridley Scott or DePalma, at least it would have more "bite" to it.
