The Dash

I read of a Man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From beginning to the end

He noted that first came her date of birth
and spoke the following date with tears
But he said what mattered most of all
was the Dash between those years

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth

For it matters not how much we own
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash

So think about this long and hard
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what is true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel

And be less quick to anger
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we never loved before

If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while

So when your eulogy is being read
With your life's action to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

Just felt like sharing...

Wow,

I thought this was going to be about the 25 cent bus around LA.

Thanks for that!

Since you've gotten us in a reflective mood, I think it's time for Judy's holiday wish for all of us.

This is what she says before she sings Vincent Youman's "Through the Years," one of the most exquisite performances of a song she ever gave.

"We have a whole new year ahead of us. And wouldn't it be wonderful if we could all be a little more gentle with each other, and a little more loving, have a little more empathy--and maybe next year at this time, we'd like each other a little more."

--Judy Garland, December 1963

Addy, thanks!

Do you have any idea who wrote that? I'd love to know.

EDIT:

Nevermind...I just did a search and found it. Her name is Linda Ellis.

Thanks again for posting it.

But make sure you stroll during the dash and take all the time you need and want to, to make each moment count

A reminder.

(And, in memory of someone I loved very much)

But, mostly, a reminder to all of us.

To make the most of our 'dash'.

And to find kindness and be gentle with eachother.
