But neither of you can seriously be advocating that this should have been performed in Dutch, are you? If a movie or play takes place with the entire cast of characters speaking in (ostensibly) a foreign language that we are hearing as English, why is any accent necessary at all?

I never noticed their accents at all. Thank God it wasn't a Canadian production, with Anne saying "we gotter go hide from dose Nazis 'n we can't go ootside at all, eh?"

They should do a Dutch film directed by Paul Verhoeven featuring the long-censored moment from the diary where Anne dyes her pubes blonde.

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

Margot: You were up in the attic with Peter again, weren't you? Anne was must you act like a whore?

Anne: I'm not!

Mrs. Van Dann: But you are a whore, darlin'.

(except this is all in Dutch)

No I just think they shouldn't sound like they just graduated from RADA. And the Franks were from Germany, so the speech patterns of Anne's parents would have influenced her to have more of a German sound, which has a more gutteral (harsher?) sound than British.

In the movie "The Hiding Place" which is a parallel to the Anne Frank story, Julie Harris did attempt a Dutch accent.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

I just think - like I said earlier - if everyone is supposed to be speaking the same language (and it's being heard by us in English) affecting accents is unnecessary and distracting.
