If a movie or play takes place with the entire cast of characters speaking in (ostensibly) a foreign language that we are hearing as English, why is any accent necessary at all?

Anne: I'm not!
Mrs. Van Dann: But you are a whore, darlin'.

No I just think they shouldn't sound like they just graduated from RADA. And the Franks were from Germany, so the speech patterns of Anne's parents would have influenced her to have more of a German sound, which has a more gutteral (harsher?) sound than British.
In the movie "The Hiding Place" which is a parallel to the Anne Frank story, Julie Harris did attempt a Dutch accent.

Posted: 4/13/10 at 1:31pmI just think - like I said earlier - if everyone is supposed to be speaking the same language (and it's being heard by us in English) affecting accents is unnecessary and distracting.
