He's running against 7 other excellent progressive Democrats in the primary next week, one of whom is an out Latina lesbian--Margarita Lopez, but her campaign was sullied when the Post (of all papers) outed her for taking money from Scientology. She denied knowing it had an anti-gay bias.
Brian Ellner's greatest upper hand is that the others are all party regulars. He's the only totally fresh voice, which counts for something. Plus he was grew up in Manhattan--in Stuyvesant Town--which counts for even more.
The Times article today about this ad and his publicly acknowledging his partner is the highest profile attention any of the candidates have received.
