This has been going over on my FB for a week now. Most of the comments seem to be basically: "Yeah, why don't those younger guys know who John Waters is?"
I don't think this is really any different than past generation gaps, except perhaps that people used to share a less fragmented group pop cultural reference point--with all the options now available to people it's less likely that young gay guys grew up watching the same late night Douglas Sirk movie showings--but by the same token there probably are a few more guys who know about some obscure 70s punk band.
Added to that I think is also that so many gay men were lost due to AIDS so there is a gap there. Still, I think the kids are alright (and shouldn't the kid in this piece be cast by someone about ten years younger?) I know I probably will get flamed on here for saying that, considering that I've been told by several members on here that I could not have knowledge of anything that happened before my time--but that's kinda the point. You can have it either way.

The actor who plays the younger guy, actual age notwithstanding, plays it perfectly. "What is thaa?"

Even when I was younger, there was a gap between me and most gays I knew. I remember once saying something about Ethel Merman and my friend said, "Wasn't she the neighbor on I Love Lucy?"

Cicely Tyson came into a place where I was working and every staff member was much younger than I. I was excited given the fact that she had helped pave the way for black women in film and had been nominated for so many Oscars. Nobody had any idea of who she was and what she has contributed. It is just the way it is. It is the same in the straight world.
