So I've seen this movie a lot of times, but I never get the whole thing with the women kissing. I'm all for women kissing...but her sister? That seems like a weird question, I know, but then it's like a chain reaction to Julianne Moore's character, only...her character didn't kiss a sibling.

p.s. I'm sure you won't react like the other people I asked but NO I'm not kidding, it's a real question. I like to understand what I'm watching.

here's my take:
virgina's sister is happy. she has a family, she gets to live in london, she's content with her life. virgina wants more than anything to go back to london, she wishes she could be happy, she wants to be "normal" and envies her sister in that respect. i think the kiss was symbolic of her wanting to suck the life out of her, so to speak. you want a part of somebody so much you try to kiss it out of them. i don't know if that's the most articulate way of saying it, though. since it was based on a book, a lot of the things that happen in the movie- or heck, even the whole movie itself- is very literary and therefore there's useally more too it than what's on the surface. sidenote: i envied miranda richardson with enormous intensity (who, btw, is quite a brillinat actress, i'm very much looking forward to seeing her in harry potter 4).

Yeah, I was a little unnerved by it too. It's that way in the book as well. Personally, I much preferred the book, but to each his own.

Actually, in the extras, the son of Virginia's sister says that they actually did have an affair.

well, it was sort of ASSUMED that they had an affair, I believe. it is quite conceivable, actually. there were many homosexual affairs back then, only they were swept under a table.

i thought of it like feinstein too... but i didn't know it was true. how could she have an affair with her sister? that is obscene.

Meryl Streep's character didn't kiss a sibling either, but you probably already knew that......
