I caught the quote while reading All About All About Eve.
I'll go back and check...
editted: couldn't find it but I did find this one
On being asked if she'd ever return to Brodway, Ms.Davis replied,
"I HATE theatre. But you know, I may. I'd love to do a musical version of All About Eve. It would be one of the great musicals of all time!" (circa 1964, six years before Applause)

That's VERY Interesting, BSTB.
I think Davis could've handled the songs about as well as Bacall did.
