The Laramie Project- It's Been 10 Years

So last night I went to a high school production of "The Laramie Project". Can I just say how unbelievably awesome it is to see teenagers who are mature enough to not only present this material, but to also really understand it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not underestimating youth. I'm just remarking on how far we've come. We didn't do plays at my high school that really dealt with life and discrimination and hate. We did fun shows or dramas, but nothing like this. And I didn't go to a small town school. We were pretty forward thinking, but it just wouldn't have happened when I was in school. It's also really cool to see them do the high school version of RENT. It's just great, because this is stuff that does affect these kids and now we're letting them explore that, rather than trying to shelter them. Not to say that this progress is happening everywhere, because it's definitely not. It was just touching to see them do this show and really feel it and understand it. I saw it in college and thought it was awesome, but it made so much more of an impact on me last night, coming from the kids. The kid who did Dennis Shepard's speech to one of the killers, wow...he was incredible. He brought more depth and emotion to it than some adults that I've seen do it. And he was the same kid that they had play the hateful Fred Phelps...what a difference. It was all just spectacular and really moving.

What's also really interesting is that they're performing it this week, when our country has made such progress in one way, but taken a step back in others. The same week that Prop 8 got passed. And it's been 10 years since Matthew's death. I searched to see if anyone started a thread about it on October 12th and I didn't find one. It's interesting to see how far we've come and yet...how much left there is to do.

Just thought I'd put that out there...

My son, a HS junior, is currently rehearsing it! Opens next week. He plays 4 roles. I've been working on the lobby display, and uncovered all kinds of fascinating info. The Advocate did a beautiful piece in their 10/21 issue. What's sad is how few seats have been sold for all 3 performances.

Lusciouslace-- I think I saw the same production as you, and I agree, I was blown away. I was crying at Dennis' speech. I was also very impressed with the boy who played Doc/the unitarian minister/Aaron McKinney, and ESPECIALLY the girl who played Marge. My school has a really strong theatre department, but I don't think we could have pulled that off.

I've said it before in other threads, but I'll say it again:

My high school did the Laramie Project a couple of years ago, and it was legitimately one of the most profound, affecting pieces of theater I have ever seen. Unbelievably powerful, and something that I wish every single person in this world could see.
I don't need a life that's normal. That's way too far away. But something next to normal would be okay. Something next to normal is what I'd like to try. Close enough to normal to get by.

Why, yes I am.

When you mentioned the school edition of RENT (Probably the one at Churchhill High School), I got an inkling that we saw the same production.

Schmerg- That's cool! But I haven't actually seen the high school version of RENT. The only thing that I've seen of it, and even this much was awesome, was when Ryan O'Connor went to see some kids in Arizona doing it and showed their video montage on his show (The Ryan O'Connor Show- on youtube! Check it out if you haven't...LOVE IT!) But even just that little bit that I saw was just really moving and cool to see.

The production of Laramie was at South County Secondary in Lorton. Was that the one you went to?

I'm dumb...it just occurred to me that you probably just meant that we might have gone to the same RENT performance and not Laramie, right? D'oh...

My son's is in NJ, and alas, the advance ticket sales are terribly slow. Thursday night has about 35 people.

Auggie that's too bad! But hopefully with word of mouth the sales will pick up. Nonetheless that's 35 people who can be moved by this story and their performances.

Yeah, it's a beautiful production -- saw part of a tech run-thru yesterday -- all done on multi-level, bleached wood platforms and small costume changes, with very subtle lighting, sound and music shifts. I think it's going to be wonderful -- a large cast, rather than the smaller ones sometimes employed makes it feel more like OUR TOWN (a good thing). Fingers are crossed for walk-ins.

Greg Pierotti, Laws, Dennis Shepard, and one I forgot. Obviously, Shepard is the big one, the eleven o'clock spot. I don't want to say too much, for fear of jinxing it. That's the one he had to prepare for the audition. And he's not actually "typed" for the part. As you know, one of the keys to any production is suggesting that this is a story being told by a group of actors, not kids playing LARAMIE people one on one. You're always an actor playing a Laramie citizen -- an important distinction. So his being cast as Dennis Shepard was not about aproximating a paternal role, but about being an actor who can suggest Shepard. He's worked hard. I stayed out of that scene.

Did your production use music and sound? (The original had the rain on stage...) This is simple, but still theatrical.

The Dennis Shepard role is remarkable. That final speech/monologue is demanding, but so touching. How cool for him...seriously!

The production I saw was technically very exciting. They used live cameras and projected those images on three screens behind them. So like when the hospital spokesperson would come out to give the medical updates, they had her live image on the screens as if you're watching her on TV. And they used that technique when all the reporters come into town as well. They used a lot of music and imagery on the screens, too. Not quite as simple, but really really cool.

Their set was just three black platforms of different heights. Then they had two sections of fence that look like THE fence. And the screens. On the side they had painted scenery like mountains and such, but that part really wasn't necessary. (Not criticizing, just my opinion)

The Shepard role is only that speech, as you know. That's what makes it challenging. You must deliver it as a specific character moment, not a lecture. Yet it is a lecture of sorts. Very tricky.

The use of cameras and such sounds like EXECUTION OF JUSTICE, and a compelling idea. This one is very "Wyoming" stylized, again with all of the pale wood. I think the cyc will be a big sky, but they were adjusting it on Saturday. Will report more after Wednesday.

Lusciouslace... we were at the same "Laramie Project," but I knew there was a performance of RENT around here, too. (I didn't see it; I've never seen RENT!)

I was saying I assumed we meant the same Laramie Project because in what other area is there also a RENT student edition not long before? By the way, Luscious, you're not a Cappies critic, are you?

Auggie-- so your son is playing a member of the Tectonic Theatre project AND characters? That's interesting. The show I saw just had the Techonic Theatre project characters not playing any other roles.

re: The Laramie Project- It's Been 10 Years

Well, the original play only has 8 people. It's supposed to have the Tectonics reenacting the people of Laramie, but my director wanted to have a bigger cast, so she made the Tectonics separate, and they split up the lines that are supposed to belong to a single narrator.

re: The Laramie Project- It's Been 10 Years

My son's cast has 26 actors playing the 60 some roles. I've only seen a bit of a tech, but the larger number on stage is quite effective. Again, the OUR TOWN angle really serves the piece. They didn't adhere to the division of roles as defined in the text; some people are playing the same roles assigned Tectonic members, but there's great flexibility. That's what's remarkable about the piece. I think college theater depts tend to stage it with smaller companies, but high schools can use big casts and involve many students -- both artistically satisfying, and a great lesson about Shepard. For a group of teenagers to spend 6-7 weeks with the material -- well, the rewards are huge, the impact perhaps life-changing

re: The Laramie Project- It's Been 10 Years

Auggie- I do think it's very effective with a larger cast. The show I just saw had quite a large cast, which was cool. I definitely agree that allowing the kids to explore this material and tap into different views on this issue helps them think more about it and decide where they stand on it. It helps educate them on tolerance, if not acceptance. I think it's great that you're a parent who encourages this, rather than shying away from it. This is real life and these are things that are going to affect the kids. But some parents want to shelter their kids and "protect" them from the bad stuff in the world. In my opinion, that's not only not protecting them...it's hurting them. It's a disservice not to allow them to form their own opinions and see that the world isn't always a nice place. When they get out on their own they'll be in for a rude awakening if they've always been sheltered.

Sorry that was sort of soap boxish. :) I just think it's cool that you are a supportive parent!

Schmergie, you are in Northern Virginia like Luscious?

What HS do you go to? I used to teach at West Springfield (also at Woodbridge, Edison and Mt. Vernon)

re: The Laramie Project- It's Been 10 Years

I saw some NYU drama students do this play last Spring in a "black box theatre" and they were amazing.

What a great piece of theatre for any actor or actress to get to tackle.

(All of those schools used to play mine, George C. Marshall, on the Falls Church/McClean/Tysons Corner border, as StockardFan and I have already discussed. None of which has anything to do with this thread...)
