I'm going into my senior year and starting to look for good audition songs. I was wondering if anyone knows if L5Y is used a lot. I also have a song I am planning to use from Mary Murphets 'Cowgirls.' Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kaija
I've heard Jason Robert Brown's things are a no-no...

Avoid Jason Robert Brown. You want the pianist to love you, not frown and sigh.

although I did sing "Stars and the Moon" for an audition for Meet Me in St. Louis. maybe THAT'S why I ended up with a male role...I ticked off the pianist! ohhhhhh, *I* get it now.

Jason Robert Brown is loathed by audition pianists, PLUS L5Y is overdone. A double-whammee.

Just say no to JRB for auditions right now. Pretty much don't do anything that's on Broadway now or has been recently, or any show that you see mentioned on this board often. Which song from Cowgirls? I used to do "Trailer Trash" and got a lot of laughs from it, and most people had never heard of Cowgirls, so they were excited to hear something different.
I just finished a run of the show. I was Mary Lou...I'm thinking about doing "Looking for a Miracle" as a ballad. or maybe saddle tramp blues. But I think they are bothe great songs.

DON'T DO JRB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (in big bold hot pink flashing neon letters)
when i auditioned at the university of hartford...the 3 girls in front of me sang "i'm not afraid of anything" i walked in and told them what i was singing (which wasn't JRB) and the pianist goes "oh thank god, if i had a month to practice that stuff i'd be fine, but sightreading that is just inconsiderate!!" and the adjudicators agreed that the songs are overdone. GORGEOUS, i might add, but overdone.
when i was at ithaca, the girl in front of me did 2 songs..."i'm still hurting" and "see i'm smiling"....those aren't even CONTRASTING JRB songs.

The other problem with The Last Five Years, and even some of the Songs for A New World songs, is that they aren't going to be type appropriate for a 17 or 18 year old leaving high school. They aren't really even appropriate for a 21 or 22 year old leaving college! You can't sing about girls who are "Younger and thinner than me" when you are 17. In addition, I wouldn't even claim that I've lived enough to understand yet what it would be like to go through the end of a marriage (or even get married, for that matter)!
