Which version of this story is your favorite, Sadie Thompson (192The Many Faces of Miss Sadie Thompson with Gloria Swanson, Rain (1932) with Joan Crawford, Dirty Gertie from Harlem U.S.A. (1946) with Francine Everett, or Miss Sadie Thompson (1953) with Rita Hayworth?

I've only seen Sadie Thompson, which I enjoyed quite a bit, despite the lost footage. I've seen bits a pieces of the Hayworth version.

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

Gloria Swanson overplayed her role in the silent...but Crawford nailed it in 1932. Huston as the Preacher is one the best roles of his, and the entire movie is great for the photography alone. If memory serves though, Lionel Barrymore as the preacher in the silent was pretty damn good. Much better than the posturing Swanson.

I saw the Hayworth version at the Stanford theater years ago and it sucked just as big on the big screen as it does on the small screen.
