Hey hey!
Any opera buffs? I'm writing an essay about the importance of structure in relation to character in the ensemble numbers of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro.....just wondering if anyone has any input!
Thanks!!

Sorry JID..I read it as the marriage of Fiero...I was excited for Elphaba...love to see her all in white. re: The Marriage of Figaro

White and green....reminds me of St. Patrick's day! Bring on the beer!

Really though, this thread would be hopping if the wickedites also made the same error in reading, Boobs!

I would suggest watching Amadeaus (or reading the script for the play) there is a good deal of situations surrounding the writing of that Opera.

Wish I could give you more input, JID... Apart from the overture, I'm not that familiar with the piece. Even though the overture is as close to perfection as it could possibly be....

Rodney, I am currently vocal directing Amadeus (strange coincidence), but the movie is SO historically inaccurate that I would never take it into consideration while writing a term paper.
Thanks for the advice though! I do appreciate it.

Judy, Figaro is my favorite opera, and I'm pretty familiar with it, but I'm just not sure what you mean by "the importance of structure in relation to character in the ensemble numbers." Maybe if you could reformulate that a little more concretely I might have some ideas... or maybe not! kill da wabbit

Thanks Chloe!

Basically I'm supposed to talk about musical structure.....I've yet to look at the score in depth (starting that in like ten minutes), but I think it has a lot to do with entrances and forms. Perhaps each character has their own form of musical structure.....I guess I'll find out soon.
I doubt that cleared it up AT ALL.
But thanks for attempting to help! hehe.

Whoa, that sounds technical. My only thought would be to look carefully at the second act finale. It's about twenty minutes without recitative, with most of the characters interwoven into a very complex series of entrances and exits. And it's gorgeous too.
