Earlier today I was at the Museum of TV and Radio and I'm a member there so I've watched a LOT over the years. I actually watched General Foods tribute to Rodgers and Hammerstein, really cool but yeah anywayz I also decided to watch a Muppet Show with Bernadette Peters.

I happen to be a huge Muppet, Muppet show, etc. fan but I never really realized when I was littler how much the Muppet Show was almost a lullaby to Broadway. They had so many theatre performers on(Ethel Merman, Bernadette Peters, Joel Grey, Julie Andrews, Ben Vereen, etc.) and so many of the numbers they performed were from Broadway shows. There's a couple of Broadway songs(I Enjoy Being A Girl, Razzle Dazzle off the top of my head) that I can first attribute to hearing and knowing from the Muppet Show.

It was such a great show, it's really sad that not only the intelligence and care isn't put into a show like that today, but even if someone tried, the way Broadway is, I doubt that so many guests would be Broadway stars. It's a shame. I would love if instead of putting out the Best of Muppet Show DVDs, if they put it on complete seasons. Oh well. Anyone other Muppet show fans out there, or who love the connection between it and Broadway?

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli

Sadly, I don't think we'll ever see the golden-age of the Muppets again, simply because Jim Henson is no longer overseeing things.

But, yes, the old "Muppet Show" was classic in that it had REAL honest-to-goodness STARS! Not just the typical "who's-coming-out-with-a-cd/movie/tv-show-this-week" kind of stars.

I think Rita Moreno actually won an EMMY award for a Muppet Show appearance! And who could forget Madeline Kahn singing "Feet"?

I also absolutely love The Muppet Show. I have a lot of episodes on tape, have memorized many of the sketches, and can do all of the voices.

The Lullabye of Broadway sketch was hilarious, if anyone remembers that.

So now you've met the court of 364, and if you ever wish to come...don't.

Better would be the Avenue Q show on primetime tv.
Now that would be fun!
How about calling it Madison Avenue!

Muppet Show, The - Extensive Season Set Update - LOTS of New Info!

Posted by David Lambert
3/21/2005

We've had word since last Fall that The Muppet Show was coming to DVD in season sets sometime in 2005. Now the folks at MuppetCentral.com have posted a huge update on the situation. Click that link to read the entire story, but here are some fabulous highlights:

Fact or Fiction: The Muppet Show DVD season sets

Season 1 is slated for release by the end of 2005

By Greg James
March 20, 2005

...After talking with several insiders about the DVD sets, some information has been collected and gathered. Please remember that until there is an official announcement from Disney, anything listed can potentially change...(but) The Muppet Show - The Complete First Season should be in stores by the end of the year.

The video is reported to be transferred from their original British (PAL) tapes,...will be unedited and will contain the UK skits. This goes to show how Disney is trying to create a collection of the episodes like never seen before.

Although at this point, the inclusion of the original season 1 opening sequence is still undetermined. Apparently there are strong arguments for including the original openings, and also powerful reasons for not including them. The answer of which it will be has flip-flopped back and forth throughout the set's production and the final outcome is not available at this time.

...Many fans wondered if these season sets would include any of the show's pilots or specials. The answer to this is yes. Disney does plan on including several of the historic Muppet Show pilots and specials.

...Many Henson employees, performers, and fans have been interviewed on film for bonus material. These include: Craig Shemin, Jerry Juhl, Jerry Nelson, Dave Goelz, Carroll Spinney, and Michael Frith - just to name a few. It is not definite how these interviews will be used, but it probably means there will be a great collection of information on these sets.

One feature that has been confirmed is trivia and other factual information. This will expose all kinds of things about the show, the characters, the skits and songs, and much more (even the die-hard Muppet Show fans will learn something). The information, facts, and trivia for the sets was provided and created with the help of Michael Dixon (webmaster of Kermitage.com), Craig Shemin, Dave Goelz and Jerry Juhl. The information was gathered and provided by people who really know the Muppet Show inside and out, and really shows the dedication of Disney to produce quality sets.

Disney has stated that they want to make the best possible sets and it seems like they are...An official announcement of the season 1 DVD features, release date, retail price, and more should be released by The Muppet Holding Company and Disney Home Entertainment later this year...

Great news in there! Our thanks to the folks at Muppet Central for the humongous update, and to a number of readers, starting with Paul Henderson, for the heads-up about the news. Stay tuned, and we'll bring you updates about any developments as they occur.
