The Nightmare Before Christmas...

I finally saw this movie for the first time at 2 AM last night, while I'm still forming an opinion on this movie I'm still wondering...
why have they not turned it into a staged musical yet?
It's such a cult classic...
I'm not necessarily supporting the idea, but it just seems like something broadway would've done by now.
By the by, sorry if this has been posted before...elsewhere...

Posted: 12/3/05 at 6:54pmIt could appeal to the Wicked crowd. Kind of a large cast for a stage show but I'm sure it could be pulled off.

seriously, walk into Hot Topic and your hit with a wall of the stuff...
which is why I'm really surprised that this is a hit with emo and goth kids...
it's a musical...

Posted: 12/3/05 at 7:05pmIt's a musical that goth and emo kids can relate to. I don't think any group is inherently for or against seeing musicals, they just might not all want to see 'Oklahoma!' Goth and emo kids love music and 'Nightmare' is right up their alley.

This has been discussed before, and we haven't been able to come up with a reason why they haven't turned it into a musical yet. It already has songs, it's visually arresting, and it has a dedicated following. Can you imagine what Julie Taymor can do with this?? (And she has a similar visual style.)
Of all movies, this is the one I'd most like to see adapted for the stage.

One of the reasons it has yet to be done is because nobody knows quite what to do. The lead character has to be able to take off his head (and the head must be able to interact with the head-less body), the love interest must be able to take off her arm (and possibly other body parts, i don't remember).
These things 'can' be done now but on the stage it has to look VERY true, because the movie has such a following.

LOL, well they do it with the black night in SPAMALOT. But, that's meant to be funny.
And, honestly, a show like this would NEVER go off-broadway. The sets and costumes alone would cost a mint and no one's going to invest their money for something that's not going to get as much exposure as possible.
I feel, this will either end up a cheesy theme park show...or some one will take it all the way.

I love Nightmare, but I see two big problems with turning it into a Bway musical. 1) So much of its charm comes from the lovely quirks of stop motion animation and the wonderful character designs, which would not be easy to transfer to live theatre, and 2) (and more importantly), it's so short. The movie is about 75 minutes (including credits), and trying to expand it to a 2+ hour show would just make it feel really padded out. I just can't see it working as a full-scale Bway show - although some sort of concert presentation of the score would be great.
Disney really needs to do a good, de-kiddified rethinking of their version of "Hunchback of Notre Dame" as a Bway musical.
