The Office (UK)

So what becomes of you, my love, when they have finally stripped you of the handbags and the gladrags that your poor old granddad had to sweat to buy you?

Series Two is one of the most perfect group of episodes that any TV show has ever had...

The final moments of Series Two were almost unbearably chilling. Bergh...

I've only seen the U.S. version, which I absolutely love. I gather you guys think the UK version is worth checking out! How does it compare with the U.S. production? How similar are the characters? I can't imagine another Dwight who would compare...

Best final lines ever: "If you want the rainbow, you've gotta put up with the rain - do you know which philosopher said that? Dolly Parton. And people say she's just a big pair of tits."

Well, the US version and the UK version are EXTREMELY different. The only thing that is even REMOTELY similar between the two is the Jim and Pam/Tim and Dawn story arcs. Dwight in the US version is more of a pompous antisocial nerd whereas Gareth in the UK version is an even MORE pompous and extremely self-serving man who continually brings up his time in Britain's Territorial Army as if that gives him reason as to why he is better than you.

Michael Scott and David Brent are similar but also extremely different. Scott is actually somewhat competent at his job and has some business sense whereas David Brent is just a complete loser in every station of life. Every word out of his mouth makes you, the viewer, so uncomfortable that you may actually have to look away from the screen at times.

So, all in all, the UK version is much much much much MUCH darker than the US version.

This is what the German "Office" looks like...

I LOVE it... It's called "Stromberg" since we already had a show called "The Office" a few years ago and it's just so good!

The guy playing Stromberg (Christoph Maria Herbst) is extremely talented, I've seen him doing live theatre, too!

Awesome. I wonder how many other countries are in on this thing.

Nothing's better than the UK Office, but the US version is pretty damn good, too. But they're completely different shows, save for the "mockumentary" feel.

But oh...David Brent! Gareth! And I'm still madly in love with Martin Freeman. It was a pretty much flawless series.

The UK version is already over? Wasn't it only on for two seasons?

The main differences are in tone. The British one creates a bleak, borderline-Kafkaesque atmosphere which squeezes just about every ounce of hope that there can be, whereas the American one is more about the foibles about a group of lovable losers.

Please note that I'm not knocking the American version at all. It's still very very good.

While the US version is pretty good, nothing will ever compare to the original.

"I was just wondering whether there will ever be a boy born who can swim faster than a shark."

Oh, Gareth.
