katt, I am SO bad about seeing long-running shows on Broadway. I figure that they've been there for 20 years, they'll still be there once I get around to seeing them. New shows are different, though, especially when it's still the original cast.
Em, that's me at the stagedoor all the time. Except my coping mechanism is babbling instead of shutting up.
Oh, I was too! I always get shakey around RENT people.
I mean...I shoved right inbetween Sweeney people to get Patti LuPone to sign something for me...but, u/s for Mark's mom? *shake* *drop marker*
I was proud of myself for being able to form sentences though.
katt, how long will you be in the city for? If you have time, you could always try for lotto or TKTS for the other shows you want to see.
I formed ONE sentence. It was a good one, though.
The *only* professional shows I've seen are Lion King (in Toronto) and the tour of Phantom. I also need to get my butt to NYC. I've been promised a trip there by my mom... as a birthday present of sorts. It's only a one day bus tour, but that's my only option right now. (I'll only be able to see one show.)
I'm so glad you enjoyed Will... great review!
Skittles, I feel like kicking myself now for agreeing to Phantom and Lion King when I should have said Piazza, or DRS, or Avenue Q, or Sweeney. I would love to see Norbert [and the rest of the original cast] in DRS, even though he's still out right now I think. And the next time I get to go it'll probably be a different cast. But oh well, I am getting to see four plays, that's pretty awesome in itself.
I'm only going to be there four days, so we are seeing a play a night.

Beautiful review, Emcee, but I think that goes without saying.
All of this is REALLY making me want to see Rent when I go to NYC in March, but my aunt has insisted that she doesn't want to see anything where she'll already know the story. Which eliminates, umm... Rent, Hairspray, Chicago, DRS, etc. It's frustrating that she doesn't get what totally different media the stage is from the screen. And the movie-to-musical adaptations are so different from the source material anyway.
katt, I think Norbert's back in but a couple of the original cast members left this past week. Oh, and remember that you can always try to see a matinee if any of those four days happen to be Wednesday, Saturday, or Sunday.
I think we are going Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and leaving Tuesday.
I'm going with my Aunt and I'm sure she wants to go do other things besides see plays. She's actually seen three of the musicals that we are going to see becauase she goes to New York and travels quite a bit. She hasn't seen Wicked yet though. Anyway, I wouldn't want to ask to see another play and seem ungrateful because I'm so happy that she's taking me. We are probably going shopping or something though. Oh well, hopefully the other plays I want to see will do well enough to be around for a while so that I can see them, even if it won't be with the original cast.
katt, I am in the EXACT same situation. Originally it was just going to be me and my aunt and we were going to try to see some edgier, more interesting stuff. Now, though, we're bringing my 16 year old male cousin who doesn't even like plays or musicals. So we had to narrow it down to things that he wouldn't totally hate (although I snuck Sweeney Todd in there based on the story description). And since the aunt doesn't want to see anything she knows of already, picking a second show will be interesting.
You could always suggest she go shopping or get coffee or something and take a load off while you see a show. That way, she knows you're safe in the theater, but she can get some time alone. Like a really high-class daycare
Ahh, I see katt. I'm sure you'll have a great time seeing the shows that you are seeing - I've seen all 4 of them, had a great time at 3, and while I didn't really enjoy Phantom, I know that I'm in the minority there.
Haha, she would probably be think: "What is wrong with her? We fly all the way up to New York and all she wants to do is sit inside a theater."
Oh, my mom and dad went to see Phantom and my dad fell asleep. But he isn't really a good judge. Whenever I make him listen to a broadway recording in the car he tells me "Don't make me listen to that stuff, it's as bad as all that rap crap garbage on the radio."
He just doesn't appreciate good music =D
[Just to clarify, I'm talking about the Broadway music. 98 percent of rap music is terrible.]

Heh, sounds sort of like my dad, who pretty much throws a temper tantrum if he has to listen to anything other than a Bruce Springsteen CD or the classic rock station. It's been a couple of years, but I'm still shocked that not only did we get him to see Hairspray, he enjoyed it!
I can't get my dad to even consider listening to anything that hints of Broadway.
I saw Hairspray a very long time ago before it was on Broadway. I think it was 2000 maybe? I'm not sure but we saw it in this really tiny theater in the Mall of New Orleans. I really want to see it again eventually because from what I remember, it wasn't that great. Not bad, but not amazing either. I really want to see it again maybe when it tours and see how I feel about it now.
My parents actually like musical theater, but they've kind of fallen away from it since they had kids. So unless it was written before 1985 and is non-Sondheim, they don't know about it. Their only problem with me seeing so many shows is the expense of it.
My dad saw the OBC of Cats. He said they were touching him. LOL.
My dad is actually the one that got me into Broadway. And if we could afford it I'm sure he'd take me to every show that came to Toronto. He really wants to see Lord of the Rings, but I'm not to sure about that one. I've been trying to talk him in to taking me to Movin' Out because he likes Billy Joel, but we missed the last tour. When we went on a cruise, we made sure that we saw all of the night time performances, especially the broadway night.
I heard that Movin Out is supposed to be touring again soon [or maybe it is now, I'm not sure] and it was supposed to come to New Orleans...hopefully that will still happen. I'd really like to see it.
I'm fortunate that my mom really likes seeing Broadway shows and got me into it from a fairly young age. She even yelled at me for not taking advantage of all of the student discount opportunities I have.
Heh, Cats. My mom said that was the only show she ever walked out of during intermission because she just couldn't take any more of it.
*hides her VHS copy of Cats that she occasionally watches*
Cats was my first show!
I was so sad when they closed it because I really wanted to see it.
